Joe "Skyboy", Henry "Dolphin", and I went out for rockfish/crab combo today.  We suprisingly got skunked on rockfish... but we sure made up for it with 3 limits of dungies in about 2 hours.  For bait, I used the scraps from the big salmon I caught last weekend.

How deep were you guys crabbing?  Do you think hoop nets would work okay out there?  I want to get in on some of that action too. :chug

Travis, we were in about 25 to 30 ft deep, so hoop nets will work... but not nearly as well as traps.  We had 4 hoop nets and 4 traps. however 90% of our crabs were caught with the traps.

JMairey, thanks for the kind words.  Likewise, I've learned so much from guys here that I feel a need to give back and share what little I know.

As for me.... I learned a lot about salmon and rockfishng from Stu and Freddie, sturgeon fishing from Erik, and striper fishing from SteveS.  And when it comes to reading surf conditions, I've learned a lot from you.  Thanks to all you guys!

Pictures of the crew with the catch of day...

These crabs may not be as big as the ones found in deeper waters, but they tasted every bit as good!

Do you think the spot you went is protected enough for this weekend or will the big swell be there too?

Thanks Chuck for guiding us out there.  Now I know traps are the way to go; you really cleaned house yesterday.  We'll try for the big ones in deeper water next time. :smt001

As far as bait goes, your salmon seems to attract the most crabs, and then it's squid.  The fish guts that I used didn't do well at all, probably because the crabs can better follow an oily trail to the trap.  I'll try using rockfish heads and skins next time.

Chuck I am in!  Let me know when you go next so I can try to make it.  Although my time is limited I have to get soon before I go nuts.

We were just outside of the harbor along the rock wall.  Inside the harbor can be good too at times.  There were quite a few other traps already in the area.

Just be careful not to drop any traps too close to boat traffic.  If you have GPS... bring it and mark your trap locations.  It's a big help at finding your traps.
