I meant this to be reply to the thread "long distance kayak".

There is only 1-2 options for SOT's built using the Stitch&Glue technique from thin marine plywood. You don't save money, but kayak speed is a little better, weight is the same, and material/tools/epoxy/glass cost is 2x more. Takes 5-6 months to build in your spare time.

SOT fishing kayaks range from $400 to $1300, so 'about twice as much' isn't very enlightening.

A friend of my dad's who's big on building woodstrip canoes (which is the way to go, IMO, over plywood) said they cost about $400 all told and required 80 hrs experienced work each.  After construction, his canoes could sell for $2500.  This was about 6 years ago, so prices for material may have risen.  I recal the epoxy being about $100.  Most of the work was on the finishing end, but if you didn't need it to be pretty for sale it could probably be cut in half.

I spent about $2800, included some high-end materials, such as Okuome marine ply, RAKA epoxy, high-end hatches from Viking Marine, and Interlux Perfection Varnish.
Tools and supplies were in my case about $1000 more than the $2800.
The Hobie Mirage drive was$375.

That's awesome.  :thumleft: I have always wanted to build a pygmy kayak. http://www.pygmyboats.com/ but they only make SINK's I've also contacted them numerous times about offering their roll-over deck configuration Osprey Standard with the Arctic Turn HV or Golden Eye Hi deeper height for my big dogs. I wear a size 13 which sounds like it might be alittle bit tight. The Big Boy Queen Charlotte just looks bulky to me. Most of their kits go between $700-$800. If they would come out with a SOT I'd jump all over it. Those wood and epoxy boats are just beautiful. I was going to buy one this year but I found this site and some others on Kayak fishing and they all sing the praises of SOT's so I'm saving up now for a Prowler 15. Your boat is gorgeous. There's nothing better than using something you made yourself. Shoot a Pheasant with homemade shot and handloaded shells, use the feathers to tie a fly and catch a trout, that's some major stokage! Next thing I need to do is wrap my own fly rod, maybe Eric can give me some tips. :smt002
And you could hear me screaming a mile away as I was headed out for the door....

Ginni Callahan based in Astoria OR on the Columbia. When I was at the Bodega Bay BCU Symposium, Ginni is a BCU Coach and taught her symposium classes using her Pygmy Arctic Tern. It was a beautiful boat. Strong also--she surfs it. She has a blog which shows her in her boat: http://kayaktravel.blogspot.com/

Here she is in Baja from her web site. She teaches in Astoria OR in Summer and winters in Baja (what a great life!)

I don't imagine that yak will have the dreaded "Outback cracked hull syndrome" in the drive well.  Looks like a very strong hull!

This weekend I should finish the outfitting my kayak with all the fishing accessories so next week I'll post a few 100% outfitted pics in the same gallery link.

Craig - have you launched it yet? Last year, I built the other SOT design from JEM, the 16' one. I went the opposite way with it though - cheap, probably $300, from 1/4" ply and heavy, around 75 pounds. I also didn't spend much time on the finish, I just painted it bright orange. It looks ok from a distance.    :smt001

I had a busy, busy summer and only got out around 7-8 times, but I'm definitely happy with mine, other than the long, painful hump at davenport.

Bill, if you remember our trip on the rockfish opener, you'll be happy to hear that I eventually managed to catch a bunch of rockfish. Unfortunately, I haven't managed to get a halibut. It's hard to say if it was because it was a tough year or if I'm just not much of a fisherman.  :smt001

Wow.  Her blog suggests she is not familiar with the concept of bad conditions, just more interesting paddles....... :smt103

I wonder if our favorite hobbit footed fisherman could keep up with this wave siren???
