So I had a conversation with one of the die-hard kayak fishermen in NCKA.....who also happens to be a consistent top contender in the Angler of the Year competition for the past years...

My question was: "How much mileage do you think you've accumulated during the year round AOTY competition?"

His response:

Mooch, It was great hanging out last weekend. You asked me how many miles I traveled this past year (so far) in our fishing quests? I had a moment to calculate (thanks yahoo driving directions) and came up with a number. This is just for the TOP TEN fish I have posted....not including other fishing or fish that have been upgraded or even multiple trips to the same location.

Cab        88
Hali        76
LMB      166
Ling        88
RF        204
Salmon  618
Smb      584
Striper   118
Sturg      82
Trout      44

Total  2068

 This doesn't include getting lost, shuttling, getting bait, trip to San Diego (Islander trip) or scouting around. If you totaled all my fishing you could easily double the total.

It might be a good topic on the board but I don't want to start it.....Have a great week, Allen

A couple of other guys I know that have logged in some serious miles to make at least the top 10 are:

Adam/ Fishunter and Freddie

So let's see some other numbers out there......(even just an estimate would do)  I'm board :smt012

*Perhaps we can include a gas card gift certificate for the top 5 of the AOTY - just a thought :smt002*

Maybe you should also ask for the "paddling mileage" in search for these fish  :smt003

Mirage mileage doesn't count!

Why differenciate which body muscle used to move the kayak?  :smt003  The distance is the same!

Thats some serious driving/dedication!  I haven't had much time to fish this year (0 rock fishing trips this year but I think I did get to dive once or twice) but I'm hoping that things will slow down and I'll get to fish/dive again soon.

Those with that much dedication deserve to win.

Of my 30+ kayak-fishing trips this year, only 8 of them were more than 20 miles away. (2 trips to The Cove, a handful of trips to Big Sur, and a few freshwater trips) And I like it that way.

Cab = 334mi The Cove
Ling = 334mi The Cove
RF = 70mi Gorda
Butt = 6mi Monterey

I've done 3k miles this year for salmon. I do that much regardless of AOTY.
It's not dedication, it's a love. It's the reason I moved here away from the Bay Area.
I'm thinking of moving further north...
If you don't know where you're headed, any road could get you there.

Like Juan put it... it's not dedication... it's the love. And like him... I'm a trucker. I'll drive how ever far, how many hours, how ever tired to get to the fish. It's all good... after last year though, I don't like to think about the miles. It's all about the journey.

i could add it up like O'b did. I got it all logged in a fancy tide book, but i got a garage to organize today. I'll crunch the numbers at the EOY and see what happened....i might cry(withTEARSofJOY)

I agree with Juan. I had a great time exploring and checking out the mouth and saw some places I havent seen for over 20 years. Id do it again too but sometimes a man has to sort his priorities out. So after a 40 hour week of work decisions are made. My house is a mess. :smt044 :smt044 :smt044 :smt044 :smt044 :smt044
