I dropped my two crab traps at the mouth of the river last night and returned this morning thinking they'd be stuffed with Dungeness.  I got 3 legal ones - better than nothing!  My fingers were frozen.  I went home and cooked the crabs and warmed up in the hot tub before cleaning up and going to work for a while.  The ocean was calling though, so I bailed out of work and headed to a favorite reefy beach.  Clearer water than usual washed inshore so I dove around on a 0.0 tide and spied a few fish and some old growth abs.  Took one deep abalone home and enjoyed my time on the beach.   :smt001

Hey Brother,

thanks for sharing another ripping day on the north coast. Missing it badly and hoping for some water time sunday or Monday, down here or otherwise. Great video footage of some slugs. A long day at work and to come home tonight, grab a beer and watch your movie was a great way to unwind. Especially enjoyed the narrative message at the end. You are a documentary film maker in disguise. Would be lying if said I was somewhat envious of you adventure. PM when you have some time. Up for a bit. Off on Sunday and Monday.

Thanks Eric for sharing. Top Notch Home Video!

I like the way you paddled right up to the tail gait of your truck :smut003

How did you controle your camera when you were plucking the abs of the rock?

I just hold the camera in the other hand, Alex.  If I can pin my body between rocks I can hold myself in a spot for a few seconds before the surge pushes me off.  When I pulled that ab it wasn't too far under the surface, so I just held my legs and butt up in the air at the surface and it pushed my torso down enough to reach the ab and film at the same time - it was a precarious move that lasted just long enough to pop the ab and get the footage.  I was stoked to get a good shot of the 'popping' motion of the ab iron leveraging the ab free from the rock - that occurence, when the ab breaks free from the rock, is a special feeling that is one of the main attractions of abalone diving!
