so i am not a superstitious person, didnt even realize it was the 13th when i pulled into doran this morning, but damn did it go down hill from there, started as a beautiful but very cold morning(29f) drove out to the coast for a little crabbing got all set at the coast and paddled out, didnt take the vhf with me when i launched because i was going to be in reasonable distance from the launch(.75mls) and straight back to the launch, it was really clear and mild wind so thought nothing about it, as i am dropping the second trap i hear a big boat heading my way, look over my shoulder and see a big cutter coming my way, one of those wave crashing coast gaurd resue types, they nearly wash me out, i am sitting side saddle at the time dropping trap, they hail me and i am like hey watch the f-out, they ask if i have license, crab gauge, gps and radio, doh, dont have the radio, now the guy gets all sgt. carter on my ass, i tell him i left it in the truck and this is the first time i have gone out with out it, he starts yelling at me about writting my ass up, as he is drifting into me, i still have my trap dropping and am in a very delicate position sitting side saddle with weight dropping, this goes on for a few minutes and he cant figure out how they are going to board me or get me and my gear safely on the cutter so he gives me a stearn warning and says he will be back through and i better have my vhf with me next time he sees me, no problem. go back to the beach and get my vhf, put the FF back in the truck and grab my burlap bag and hang out for an hour or so soaking up the rays. then i paddled back out to check the traps, pulled the first trap and had four keepers all over 6.5in and a few under size that got thrown back, paddled to the second trap and pulled it up and found 1 legal dungie and a huge 6.25in rock crab, by this time the wind was really coming up, wind waves were getting pretty big on the paddle back, as i came into the surf line the offshore winds were getting some nice faces on the waves so waited  until a lull in the set and paddled in fast, jumped out of the yak as a bigger set was coming in behind me and grabbed the bow handle and started jogging to the beach as i am looking over my right shoulder making sure i am not going to have any surprises and i see something in my peripheral on the left go flying and hear a loud splash, by the time i realize what it was, my vhf came out of the clip on my pfd, the yak was getting turned so had to keep running up the beach to get yak and crabs safe, buy the time i got back it was hopeless in finding the vhf, tried for awhile but it was donated to posideon. now im thinking well these are now some exspensive crabs, load all the gear into the truck and get ready to head home and the truck wont start, it turns over but wont catch, ssssshhhhhhhhiiiiiiiiiittttttttt!!!!!!!!!!!!, try again after a few minutes and still nothing, wait another 10, then another 10 then call AAA and i have to get towed home, thank god for the premiumn memberhip, free towing up to 100 miles, well thats my f-ing friday the 13th story, as i said before i am not superstitious but damn what a day, cameron

What's up with the VHF requirement?  That's not a law, is it?...

Bummer deal, Cameron.  At least you got some crabs and got out OTW.

Cam thats a wild story alright. I especially like the Sgt Carter line. You had me roaring on that one. Did he also ask if you had a horn or a whistle? You dont have to have a GPs I am sure. Maybe a radio. Anyway you were a stationary object and he was under power. You had the right of way. What an asshole.

Bummer Cameron I had problems with my clip but I always attach the wrist strap to my vest strap and only lost the clip. What brand was it ?

Samething happened to me at Shelter Cove. My VHF radio came off my PFD without knowing it till Eric had found it in the water where we launch. The clip
design on the Uniden model I had is not good at all. Anyhow, I hope those
delicious crabs you caught today will make up for the snags you had to deal with
today.

yeah, i didnt think that i was required to have a radio on a kayak, isnt any boat over 25ft or so that is required to have a radio? also the tow truck driver was saying that i need regestraion numbers too, but i thought that was just if you had an electric motor or gas motor attached in some way, cameron
