The vhs is news to me. I think he screwed you there. Although it is a very good safety idea that I agree you should have one, but not required. You only have to register any boat with any type motor. Single HP don't count... :smt002

P.S. on my vhs radio I use a piece of the one peice velcro to wrap around the body also along with a leash. That way I figure it will ALWAYS be with me if and when I REALLY  need it after a dunking. Sorry your learning the hard way....

Today sucked all right. Non-yak trip. Heading to Pomona (So Cal) to the drag races and to see my Mom for her b-day. Get to Tulare and stopped for a bite to eat. Look in rearview mirror and saw nothing but steam out the exhaust. You guessed it, blown head gasket. Turned around and headed back towards Sac. Put Stop Leak in trying to slow down the water loss. Had to stop every 40 miles, but made it home. Just did the f-ing gaskets 18k ago. I think I actually cracked a head. I do the work myself, so will find out in the morning. Sorry to steal the thread, but had to vent.

There is no requirement for anything on a kayak.  I have a few good buddies in the CG, and I specifically asked that for in the bay and in the ocean.  Vessels over a certain length, have requirements, I believe it is around 18'.  I got a ride back from the CG one day in the bay when there was a RIPPING outgo and strong wind blowing out, very odd day.  Huge wind waves.  Crissy Field is not a place for beginners, and I did not even think of checking the tides, just had a day off and wanted to fish there.  One other time out of Berkeley, I had a similar day, but was doing fine, just working my tail off to get back and I was almost at Angel Island, the CG helo kept buzzing me and getting on the loud speaker asking if I was ok.  The CG was getting ready to splash a vessel at Berkely to come haul me in when I came around the breakwall into the marina.  I dragged the yak up and laid on the grass for a long time.  They also confirmed that a radio is not a requirement, but a dang good idea.  I bought one a week later.  I take it with me about half of the time, most of the time I am in a group, and someone has one.

Sounds like that tow driver didn't know WTH he was saying!  We don't need no stinkin registration numbers! (Unless your yak is motorized)  Sucks you lost your radio.  Do these radios being lost not have leashes attached to them?  My uniden came with a little lanyard and I added a brass clip and always clip it to my PFD.  I would think having the lanyard as being a requirement before purchase.

Yep, the 13th was a bad day. Cracked head. I guess overall not too bad after 568,000 miles. 4 head gasket jobs. 1 free short block from Toyota at 250k. Original heads have 568k, just rebuilt a couple times. Good thing I'm a decent backyard mechanic. Looking into new rebuilt engine on Mon to start over. I still love this truck. It's in great overall condition.

VHF and GPS requirement is news to me also.  I think those guys are on some kind of powertrip.
I dropped my radio on my first outing with it in alameda.  it was under for about 20 minutes before I realized it was gone.  I found it by feeling for it by the boat ramp.  After that incident I took off the line from my camera and attached it to the vhf.  I loop it to my pfd and also use the clip.

Can you imagine that he expected you to call him on a handheld radio in order for him not to run you over, and he was upset at you?  I can not imagin grabing my radio and getting a response that quickly from a boat under power!

Fire a Flare across his bow and let him explain that to his CO

I think that the only required item for kayaks is an approved lifejacket ( http://www.dbw.ca.gov/pubs/ABC/reqequip.pdf).  Also  a whistle or sound device, and lights for nights. Maybe flares for nights also. I carry them anyway.
