Hit Pinecrest today as a favor to the father in law.  He walked around the lake taking pictures while I fished off the boat docks.  I originally thought it would be about a 2 hour trip, so didn't want to bring the kayak.  Of course if I knew it would evolve into a 6 hour trip, I would have brought the yak.

Anyways, the fishing was good. I caught approx 25-30 trout, all small mostly stockers with a few holdovers mixed in.  Fish ranged in size from 6 inches to about 14.  Most were skinny.  Kept 4 bleeders.

1 fish on a small panther martin
1 fish on white power eggs
all other fish on chartreuse power worms either fished weightless under a casting bubble or just tossed out with a tiny split shot.

bite was best from around 10-12, with the majority of the fish being landed at that time.  bite also picked back up around 2:30.

nice lake, pretty place and its great this time of year since it is not nearly as busy as during the summer.  great weather today, sunny and warm.

Cool report Ben.

I grew up fishing that lake as my grandparents had a cabin 10 minutes down the road.  I've heard the winter can be good as it is drained and the fish are a little more concentrated.  A couple years back a 7 or 8 lb brown was pulled out.  There is also a LMB population in there.

The real treat in that area is Beardsley, about another 20 minutes up the road and then another 40 down to the lake.  LOVE it, and ironically, haven't had the yak on it - yet. :smt011

Not to threadjack, but is it no boats or no motorized boats?  Thought I read somewhere where people were using float tubes.  I ask, because yes, Lyons is another great reservoir.

no boats in lyons.. bummer, way back in the late to mid 80's or so they used to rent boats and you could camp anywhere along the lake shore... it was also a hot spot for riding dirt bikes... then one day we rode down there, gate was locked, went around it and the shack and boat rentals were gone.... no more boats or swimming i am told, its been that way for years, we have a family cabin way back behind the dam, wed always take the dirt roads via dirt bikes when we were younger and fish all day long... now only horses and bikes aloud on that trail, LAME!

anyway we still fish it, we take the dirt roads in threw the back on the far side of the lake... in the early spring we kill it where the river comes into the lake, great place to camp for free too.

Well, that is too bad.  I know it would be quite a hike from HW 108, but I was wondering about the feasibility of pulling a yak to the water's edge.

anyway we still fish it, we take the dirt roads in threw the back on the far side of the lake... in the early spring we kill it where the river comes into the lake, great place to camp for free too.

Boy, what I'd give to know the dirt roads that lead to it.  Sending PM.

yeah, ill hook ya up with the back roads, ill try too google map it for ya...

What it does is take you to the OTHER side of the lake, not the 108 side.....

from there you can park on the shore and fish from your truck in some areas...

BUT, the thing is once you get almost to the lake, there is a gate back there, at certain time of year its locked, usually when its wet and muddy still... however it will open...

its a cool drive back there, all dirt, you cross over the river, some KILLER single track riding if you like dirt bikes too!

Like i said we usually go all the way to the river inlet, fish and party and camp.

sorry for the thread jack, but the Pincrest, Beardsley, Twaine Harte area is fun...

man havent stopped at pinecrest for years, its gets busy in summer

Sonora Pass is one of my favorite areas in CA. Done a lot of backpacking (and horsepacking lol) into the Emigrant Wilderness. Fished every hole along the Middle Stan from Relief Res to Dardanelles. And, of course, the requisite Pinecrest adventures. Absolutely beautiful country up there. Been meaning to get up to one of my secret 4X lakes w/the yak and hit my golden trout sure catch pond.
Thanks for the report Ben, and the info guys. Brings back some good (and crazy) memories.
