After the cooler temps that are coming in and the rain that is likely this week I'm hoping for a good day of trout trolling this Saturday. Theresa and I will be launching sometime between 0730 and 0800. Company is welcome, see you there!  :smt006

Knock em dead FJ and Theresa.  Looks like you'll get a little wet doing so and hopefully that doesn't hinder things.  I've had some good days with rain drops hitting the water.

I'd lobby harder to get out and join you but Saturday is the wife's birthday - giving me NO chance.  It's cool, I've planted the seed for the following weekend. :smt002

Thanks for the invite FJ.  Now that crabbing might not be an option because of the swells, me and superD270 might join you if it doesn't rain.

FJ,
As Lapulapu has said, we will be joining you this Sat at DV. I've read in previous posts that you are very familiar with the area and appreciate your willingness to share them. Any tips on rigs for productive trout fishing?
Thanks.
Danny

A few of you said you would join us if it doesn't rain, so here's the first tip: Join us ESPECIALLY if it rains!  :smt023

The best days of trout fishing I've ever had have been in the rain. At Del Valle I've had some epic days where I'm catching fish after fish when there's a squall over the lake, and nothing in the time between the squalls. The best days have been when there is light rain off and on throughout the day, so don't be a sissy!  :smt044

I'd advise trolling with J-5 or J-7 Rapalas in Firetiger, Rainbow trout, or brown trout. I also will slow troll orange grubs. Some people have had success drifting a Carolina Rig with a 3' leader and a couple green or white power eggs. I'm not a huge fan of that technique, but it can be effective when nothing else is.

FJ,

Thanks for the inputs.
Will look for those Rapalas & orange grubs at my favorite fishing supply in Story Rd.
Rain or no rain it is.

Count me in too!  If you guys know of a good place to purchase the lures FJ mention in the tri-valley area, let me know.  I usually stop by the Sport Chalet and Walmart in Pleasanton, but would like to know if there are other places in the area as well.

Wish I could join y'all, but I have to work Saturday (rare).

Lures a-plenty at Outdoor Pro Shop in Oakland off 880 & 16th. Or try Sports Authority @ 880 & Davis. Or Walton's Pond on Washington in San Leandro.

I may join you... thanks, J!

I wonder how the rain will affect the mussel inspections this time.

Eric, I hope you don't experience another "I don't wanna get wet" inspector.  :smt005

Howard brings up a good point. There is a boat inspection and your boat needs to be perfectly clean outside, and perfectly clean and dry inside. Also make sure that your PFD is clean and dry. When I load my boats the night before I take a towel and wipe out the inside of the hull. If I am at all concerned about condensation in the hull in the morning then I will stop in Livermore and wipe the inside of my boat again to make sure it will be dry when I get to the inspection station. THEY WILL TURN YOU AWAY.

Don't worry if it is raining. They will still make sure your boat is dry inside, but they will not turn you away for the outside of your boat being wet if there is rain, fog, or a heavy dew. They are actually pretty pleasant and reasonable people, but they are sticklers for making sure the inside of your boat is dry.

My yak passed last time.  Do they inspect it again if you tell them that DV was the last water its been in?  Also, should we pick a site to congregate to before and after fishing?

This has been my experience as well, for the most part.  But once at Quarry I was turned away because they "couldn't inspect my boat when it was raining".  Afterwards, I was assured that was an isolated incident, and received an apology.  But it was hard to accept, especially since I had called beforehand to ask about inspections in the rain.

With winter coming, I need to forgive and forget!

if you pass once and no other contact with water, methinks a 30 day safeharbor period applies
