Gentleman,
If you lament the closing of ling and rockfish today....what better motivation then to take up diving for dinner? :snorkel
 Consider this straight from the rulebook;

Lingcod

The recreational fishery for lingcod (Ophiodon elongatus) is open to divers and shore-based anglers from May 15, 2009 through November 30, 2009. The fishery is closed to boat-based anglers as of November 1, 2009 (see important NOTE at the end of this section). Lingcod may only be taken or possessed4 in waters less than 180 feet (30 fathoms) deep. The daily bag and possession limit is 2 fish, with a minimum size limit of 24 inches total length.

Click here for a summary of groundfish regulations.

Cabezon and rockfish all yearf round. :wav:
So,
Go get  a wetsuit and get it on!

But I only dive in 180ft or deeper. So lingcod are still offlimits for me. Maybe I'll try 170ft next time though... :smt044

Quick question.  Do people actually spear fish in the winter months?

Let me get some money first.  I have a really good mask and snorkle.  Have any ball park idea of how much I'll need to get the rest.  Thanks  By the way is it much much colder in the winter?

The coldest part of diving in the winter is puting on the suit.  The water is warmer than in May.  There are days between storms with no plankton bloom and you can have days with 50' viz.  Spearfishing is a blast.  I can make 180 but it would be a one way trip.

Love to hunt Love to fish this will be a natural morphing of my outdoor activities. Any suggestions on expanding lung capasity other than running up down mountains (bad Knees)

Brian,
It's mostly mental.  You need to be relaxed in the water and slow your heartbeat down.
That's been the hardest part for me.
When diving, try to be as efficient as possible, which means moving slowly.  Don't kick hard.  A few of those will raise your heartbeat and consume O2.
Early on, I used to get hot in my suit.  Basically, I was working too hard.  Now I get cold easily, because I'm exerting a lot less effort when I dive.
One more thing.  Take the time to rest/recover on the surface before going down again.  That's another common mistake.

Baja and Potato, great advice.  I arrived home tonight to find a package from Santa (UPS) containing my new Picasso dive suit.  I think I'm also going to pull the trigger on a AB Biller 48".  Diving  is a great way to extend the madness.
