Off Eureka.  They go to 250 - 300' generally - that's 5-6 miles out - and bounce a 2# lead ball along the bottom with a herring or B2-Squid or other pinned above it.  It can be sloooooooowwww going waiting for those guys to bite (or not!).  A Eureka woman caught one that big jigging for lings in 80 FOW last year, but that was an anomally just like my man Domenic's Pac-Flattie in 55' at the Cove.  You gotta love the fact that there's a chance...   :smt007

I put this up here because I think it would be a thrill to catch a fish like either of those beauties, and because it would be an even bigger thrill, for me, to video it and let it swim away.  I'm obviously not the first person to suggest such a thing - I just think we need more and more of it.  To some extent, fishing's future depends on some level of change regarding what we do, what we keep, and what messages we send.  Please don't mistake that kind of thought for me saying I'm perfect, because that diversion's gotten old.   :smt001

There has been a number of larger PacButts caught this season. But they weren't entered in Englund Marine's derby. Heck, I saw a bigger one at the cleaning station in The Cove on 4th of July wknd.

Steve, that is a fatty for sure! Or are you just trying to make the fish look bigger by posting a pic of your skinny young self?!  :smt044

I was an animal back then and a spearfishing fanatic.
I cannot believe I was that slim.
Thats what 7 hours underwater per day ...2 days a week in Monterey water will do for you.
aahhh...
Back then was a different reality.
No mortgage, no missus, no munchikin....[ wipes a tear]
only lings and cabs and halis oh my!
