Can you elaborate on why a canoe is more dangerous than a kayak. This sounds important.

It's like floating on a cork vs floating in a cup.

If somehow you roll over your sit-on-top, you can just turn it over, get back on and be on your way.  If water rolls over the top, it just rolls right off again.

I am actively looking for a cheap used kayak so I can see if it is somthing I really want to do. If it turns out I really like yaking, I want to go with the hobie mirage drive boats to free up my hands for fishing. Around here it is almost always windy so having a means to battle the drift while still fishing seems pretty darn important. Do you think this would be a good boat for me to start with http://slo.craigslist.org/boa/1431830619.html

Thanks
John

the guy says theres  holes he "patched"

i just got my first yak 6 months ago... got it on sale in santa cruz, what i did was just go in and put 10% down and they gave me the sale price, every pay day id go in and pay a little here and there, before i knew it i had a brand new yak!

Sooooo STOKED!

I too am a FORMER canoe owner, i have the coleman and an old town...

There no comparison man, the kayak is the way to go for me, ill never go back to the canoe...

these ocean kayaks are amazing little boats! paddles WAY easier then the canoe too, WAy safer, canoe can be tippy, and most conditions i faced this year i would NEVER want my old canoe in...

have fun searching, but dont settle, take your time get what you want!

I also did allen B's class, and i got to test ride his new trident that day, you should look into that.

In my experience, canoes can be kinda tippy. If you were to flip a canoe in the ocean, you would have a hard time 'righting' it and bailing enough water to make headway. And twice as difficult to right a canoe w/a small OB or trolling motor. Although, I'm not discouraging you from doing what you love--there are lots of guys who fish from canoes in the ocean. Just be extra cautious of your surroundings and monitor the marine conditions. And know how to right the canoe if it ever does flip.

That WS Ride is an older model. Suitable for normal ocean conditions. And a pretty good price too. But the seller's comment about patching a hole seems sketchy.

I'd pass on that boat, but that's just me. I didn't find that year of Ride to work very well in ocean wind chop, too much hull slap for me.
The yak in the pic looks pretty beat. Patched holes in a rotomolded yak? holes at the scuppers? no thanks.

You might be better off renting a few boats & trying them out rather than going to buy one used right off the bat.

Thats what I was thinking. I saw the price and thought it would be a good "until im ready to commit to a real yak" boat. But then I would taking it in the ocean and putting my life at risk for a "deal". Not to smart. Im gonna just wait and try some out. Thanks a bunch.

Dude, I'm your neighbor.

Use the canoe out in Morro Bay only, but do not, under any circumstances, paddle out into the blue water with that thing.

Get yourself a kayak, wetsuit, pfd then pm me.

if you're truly looking for a starter kayak, probably look into a scrambler.  nice and stable, slow and steady.  cheap, 2-300 commonly on craigslist if you're patient, even down there.  ocean worthy and resale is not too bad since you're buying so cheap. eventually you can move into something nicer.

i do know that the kayak store down in carpinteria (a bit of a distance from you, yes) often has used kayak sales for decent prices, so keep an eye on them.  don't remember the name.

I definitely do not have any intention of taking the canoe outside of the harbor. All it would take is a stiff onshore breeze, which is all so common around here, to cause some serious problems. I may be fishing from a canoe, but I am not an idiot.

Are you my neighbor, like actual neighbor, or do you live in the Osos area?

John
