FIRST POST!

I am so stoked to have found this forum. There is so much amazing info here. I am learning so much. Here I am moving out of lurker mode into posting mode. Thanks for the info folks.

As for my odd ball qualities.......

I live in Los Osos, south of Morro Bay. Not exactly a NOR CAL person but willing to be a hitchhiker in this forum. Besides, Big Sur is definitely in my area as far as I am concerned, does that make me Nor Cal, prolly not. Oh well.

My boat is a 16 foot flat back canoe with a 3 hp 1950's Johnson 2 stroke.  Still wondering if this is easier to use than a kayak or not. Been debating the purchase of a set of Hobie Outbacks for a while now. Maybe someday. For now this works great.

I spent my whole life bait and lure fishing in the Sierras and consider myself really good at that but I don't know a thing about fishing in the ocean, but absolutely love fishing and have found myself determined to figure this out. At least figure out how to catch dinner. At this point I am extremely frustrated but hooked.

My fiance is as addicted to learning how to catch rock fish and halibut as me and that makes me so stoked!!!

Well, there you have it. I'm glad to be a member. Thanks for the fun talk.

John

Welcome to the Madness, motor-man!  I don't see an age by your avatar, so I'll assume you're an old fart since you're using the motor.   :smt002  Just razzin' ya!

Hey, cool. It'll be good to here of adventures from the southern end of the NCKA spectrum.

Probably telling you what you already know, but a quick and dirty rockfish rig goes like this:

Buy a shrimp fly rig. Usually 2 flies on some pretty heavy line. Cut off the bottom fly (the snap swivel representing "bottom" here). Put a 2-6oz lead head and twin tail scampi on the snap swivel. So now you have a weighted lure at the end of your line and a fly about 15" further up.  Jig that at the bottom around reef/rock structure or in/around kelp beds. Generally you'll get rock fish on the fly, lingcod and halibut on the scampi. Of course there's more (as you've seen), but that will let you catch fish as you ramp up.

Good luck!

Fish farmer gave you some great advice.  You won't be frustrated long if you follow it.   Abking is kidding you but most of us ( if not all) really love the self reliance side that kayak fishing with out a motor gives us.  Hope you get a kayak soon since this is a kayak site, and  not really meant for people with motor boats.  Just razzin you a little more.  I'll let you know when I'm coming to Cambria if you need a kayak and need a partner.  I have three so I could bring an extra.  Andy

PS I saw a nice trident 15 in craigs list for nine hundrd dollars in your area.  You could also find something a lot cheaper to get you started.

Thanks for the ribbing fellas :)

Unfortunately, I am not an old fart. Definitely young enough to paddle my a$$ around since I'm 28 , its just the boat rig Ive inherited and if you want to make it work you do. Just being on the water is what matters to me, any way I can. I want to make a good choice with a kayak so when that time comes I will be so stoked I waited. Right now I am in the learning stages, trying to get on the water at least once a week. There is so much to learn.......

I appreciate all of the warnings about safety. It is one of the reasons I like the canoe. It feels stable and I can haul all of the creature comforts in it that make us feel comfortable (sometimes including our black lab, which I really don't like doing but feel terrible leaving her in the car, too much stress.)  Trips to go fishing are sometimes impromptu and going home to drop the dog off sometimes burns valuable sun time.

Safety is a huge concern of mine. It's my main concern when considering buying a kayak. I don't care about getting wet, or leaving most of my gear on the shore, or landing a fish on my lap. I just don't want to have a big butt or ling pull me over the edge and send my unleased gear to the bottom of the ocean. I'm a great swimmer, and surf regularly, so my fear of the ocean is less than that of a non surfer, but I have a clear understanding of the power and intolerance of the ocean.

Andy1976, if you ever come down this way, I would love to do some fishing with you. San Simeon looks like a great spot to do some fishing! I have never fished from a yak before and a lesson would be Awesome!

Thanks for all of the kind words.

John

No problem but Cambria has an awesome launch called Leftingwell.  I never seem to do good when I launch from San Simeon...  Plus on the weekends other small boats and kayaks always leave from there.  I should be going next saturday.  I'll let you know a couple of days early.  Andy

Yeah, my fiance used to go fishing w/me too.
Then we got married..... :smt044

Haha just messing with ya! Thanks for coming out of the lurker closet. And good luck w/the scanoe. Although you should know that a SOT kayak is waaay safer than any canoe (former owner of a 17' Coleman canoe).
Good luck!

You might freakin' love the Hobie.  Find a kayak store near you where you can try one out.  Try a Revolution as well as the Outback.

Oh the decisions. This is why I am still using the canoe.

Can you elaborate on why a canoe is more dangerous than a kayak. This sounds important.
