Hey AK,

Very nice East of Japan south of Ferndale (not to blow up the spot), spent a year up between Eureka and Arcata and have fished the jettys and Trinidad with my pops a time or two.

Even though we never ended up with a fat Ab or a black still remember those couple of days well. That southern section of the coast must take alot of exploring before you come up with the sea food.

Thanks for the post and pics, takes me back,

Wait a minute here...If Japan is to the East of U.S. then that place should be somewhere West of Japan right?  :smt003  Thanks for sharing the trip with us and the pictures + video are awesome as always!

Cool report Eric.

Regarding your mystery fish skull.. it's not a ling or a salmonid.  Rather, it's a Merluccius productus (a.k.a. Pacific Hake or Pacific whiting).  I did my graduate school work on its Atlantic cousin Merluccius bilinearis.  http://www.int-res.com/abstracts/meps/v196/p279-290/

Here's an image of a whole Pacific whiting from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Sweeeeet, Brian!  Thank you so much for ID'ing that fish.  I used to catch those when we were salmon trolling out of Humboldt Bay.  I've heard they're decent eating but so delicate that you must immediately clean and ice them or they're mush.  We never ate one.

thanks for the nice day on a far away beach......our beaches down here have been stripped of anything cool or old that may have been washed up.

I hear what you're saying, but I do know of a very cool little hidden beach south of Pigeon where we used to find lots of treasures...  I'd like to go back there some day.  I'll try to post some pics of it later.

Great post again Eric!
The shore structure looks familiar, but they didn't allow fires on the beach where I was :smt012

I did a beach trek with my wife & the little wolf-dog on Saturday. We found some neat stuff at a nice little protected beach very south of PP. I think FW had a contest there this year :smt044

Ahhh, the great eastern Pacific provides a bountiful harvest once more.
Cool mystery skull too. Andy caught some Pacific whiting out of Moss Landing last year: http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php/topic,13945.0.html
