copied from Coastside, but thought y'all would appreciate it.

came across this... probably old news
http://www.dfg.ca.gov/marine/faqindx.asp

Q. Can private individuals do anything to prevent sea lions from invading and fouling our docks and boats?
A. All marine mammals are protected and managed by the federal government, under the stewardship of the National Marine Fisheries Service (the State has no jurisdiction). The 1994 Amendments to the Marine Mammal Protection Act gave property owners and government officials the authority to protect private and public property by deterring sea lions, provided the acts do not result in serious injury or death to the animal. Recreational fishermen can deter sea lions from damaging their gear and catch, again provided that the acts of deterrence do not result in serious injury or death to the animal. Methods may involve preventing access, acoustic devices, seal bombs, boat hazing, spraying with water, or lightly prodding. One cannot break skin, or direct an act at the head or eyes of the sea lion, or direct acts at seal lions that are hauled out on rocks or beaches. Firearms, crossbows, spearguns, harpoons, javelins, arrows, spears, or other similar devices are prohibited. Relocating sea lions or offering them tainted fish or other consumables is also prohibited.

I am wondering on that whole seal bomb thing.  I can whip up a bunch that could seriously injure them, but if they are allowed? Is there a certain amount of PETN that I am allowed? What about the packaging and does it have to remain bouyant, or can I weight it down?  What about initiation system?  I am thinking nonel, 150 spartan cast boosters floated out on a 2 liter bottle, and they you know what.....

I even like the color.

if a sea lion wants your fish, nothing is gonna stop him, with maybe the exception of a seal bomb.

#1 - if your fish is underwater, its his.  no slingshot, paintball gun will prevent him from stealing your fish.  your best defense here is awareness.

#2 - if you are in territory of a 1500lb stellar sea lion, and he is in the loving mood and feels you're a threat to him, i don't think a few paintballs off his very thick fatty hide will prevent him from coming up and beating the &^#&^$@ out of you.  again, best defense is awareness.  i'd rather just paddle away in that situation. good thing jerry has not learned how to train them for that yet.  although there are a few who have learned intimidation skills as i was shown at SC.  I think the local boarders taught them that.

I like the water gun option. We can use it to keep our catches wet too  :smt003

Lamar holds the one and only special permit for a furbag-repelling javelin.

Yeah, that'll work! As long as you've got a real fire hose to do it with... if not.... you can repel 'em when they laugh so hard as you stand wobbling on the 'yak trying to get 'lil one eye out to spray them so they can't grab the fish!
