me and a guy were talking about kayaks and what their range is for fishing, and we got to wondering whats the farthest people go out. So i'm curious whats the farthest you've ever gone out to fish? We're talking ocean not a lake unless its the great lakes. The farthest I've ever gone was about 1/2 mile out.

Down south some people have gone from LA to Catalina. That's close to 30 miles. Up here the weather and water are less predictable. I've gone out a mile. I don't think there is much reason to go out further if it's rockfish and lings you want. You can't fish over 180 feet deep. My concern for distance would be more for traveling long distance along the coast. I would love to go out of Shelter Cove or Bear Harbor and go miles north or south and look for less used areas. Maybe an overnighter.

oh man...there's a few guys here that are way out.Blue where are you?

Dux is 2 miles from the launch. I've been out about 2 or so miles hunting for salmon off muir. 2 miles or so off Pt Reyes (that's freaky). IN the bay the Pump house is almost 2 miles from shore...

We were at least 4 miles out of moss one year for salmon... maybe more.  That was a long day.

Routinely go out 2 miles particularly in San Pablo bay during sturgeon season and during rockfishing season it's common to go 2 miles or more from the launch point though actual distance from shore is much less.

1.5 miles off Shelter Cove and a point north of there.  3 miles off Trinidad.

It's important to know what the currents will do when you head offshore, and of course the wind is a major factor.

SBD, Mahi and I paddled north-northwest from the north jetty of Humboldt Bay a couple summers back, and we ended up directly northwest of the jaws and not as far out as we thought we'd be - we got pulled south in a big way.

It's a blast to be in open water, but it demands careful attention to the conditions, dedication to having the proper gear and there's a responsibility to have your body ready for unexpected challenges.

Alan and I were 5 miles out at La Jolla once but it was calm and nice. We went 3 miles out at Limekiln and it was a little freaky. Since I got my Hobie Adventure I'm much more comfortable way offshore. I bought my Hobie after a particularly long hairy paddle against wind, swell and current for 3 hours one time in my P15. It was one of those 4 strokes left to every one right paddles. Kicked my ass. The Hobie always gets me home in comfort.  :smt003

if you are strictly talking range (as in how far you can travel, which of course is a different question), i have noticed that my range on a typical trolling day might be 8 miles-- and 15 or more on occasion. Strangely my longest trip in terms of miles covered has been striper trolling- all in little 1/2 mile or less increments

Kayote, I agree about the Adventure. I've had three paddle yaks and they are fine in good conditions but I have a very messed up neck so struggling against heavy wind soon has my neck feeling like someone is holding a torch to it. I can go forever comfortably in my Adventure and it moves quickly through wind. I think I'm going to do a long range tour of the coast next year.

Trolling for salmon off Monterey/PG a few years ago, I logged 11 miles on my GPS. Looking at the track, furthest out was probably 4-5 miles offshore! My arms were sore for days.

While camping at Punta Gorda a few weeks ago we watched a double sit-in touring yak paddle past our campsite, and on up beyond the lighthouse. The next day we saw them paddle south in the dusk into very thick fog. They either knew exactly what they were doing, or they knew nothing. I guess it was the former since we didn't ever have wet & bleeding kayakers run up to us for help that night. They were always close to shore, but there ain't much out in that area for miles in either direction, and the surf was UP.
I haven't done any yak camping for years, but for me it was the only way to travel. Backpacking on the water, how does it get better than that!
The longest paddling day I had was about 16 miles on flat glassy seas. Farthest offshore I'd guess would only be a mile. I prefer light gear & shallow water, which works for most fish around here. Longest time I've spent on an SOT would be maybe 8 hours.

Furthest offshore distance: ~5 miles trolling salmon out of ML.

Long distance logged in a singleday: ~14 miles.  You guess it, trolling salmon out of ML.
