Fished a few hours today with Ernie. Squid are in pretty thick. Found out last night I have a hole in my yak, though it didn't stop me from going out today. It's a small leak but big enough to make me paranoid. I drained out about 1/2 a gallon today after 5 hours on the water. Anyways had a great time, we tried fishing the kelp beds with live squid but the fish weren't biting squid. Ernie caught various rock fish and a greenling all on cut sardine chunks. They passed on the live squid and ate cut sardines. I found that a little strange. Nice day OTW

wow, that first photo captures crazy color patterns on them.  Between them and the dines they are making the lures we buy seem more realistic looking all of the time!  Great photos and report, thanks for sharing!

We were using Ahi squid jigs. Yeah, sabiki style, drop to the bottom and start jigging fast strokes (snagging works, but most bite), when you feel the bump reel in fast and don't let up on the pressure because they can slip off due to barbless jigs. Only crappy thing today was all the jellyfish. Probably caught equal amounts of squid and jellies

Squid are all good. Calamari makes for good WAF. We get 'em in Wa during the cold winter months so you guys got it good.

Sweet! This happens a few times each year and they are usually followed by other fun fish. When they're in thick, you can jig them w/sabikis from the wharf. I'd LOVE to deploy one of those on a halibut rig down along the Sur coast!

Calbear,

Love eating those squid, adobo style.  Have not fished in Monterey yet.  Where did you launch?  Did you had to go very far?  I'll probably go down there this Saturday and fished till Sunday.  I wonder if its legal to net them.

Yes they are legal to net since they are considered to be baitfish, also there is no limit, (just speculating correct me if I'm wrong) have you tried adobo and poured coconut milk? ummmm!!

Monterey is on fire right now.  It appears there is a hot Tuna bite 50 miles off shore.  I can only imagine what type of fish may be out there with all the bait.
