Finally got the little one in day care PT. So I am gonna go play in the waves at Cowells. 8am ish happy to have company. Unless there is a better place to go in SC. Keep in mind I am a noob to yak surfing and I don't want to piss of locals.

would love to join you but must decline, this time.

tons of web info on wave ettiquitte. Its pretty straight forward.
Its very rare to have some junior surf rat try to posture with you but if it does happen you can always politely remind him who has the paddle in hand.
The YakBoard does have a bit of a learning curve. I have a picture of my first attempt with it on a very humble wave and I ended up pearling. I found that it, like most waveyaks, performs better on larger waves.
hope you have a blast!

as a long time surfer in Cowell's, I would suggest find another spot to play on the waves.

Locals are very aggressive went it comes to kayakers.....  :smt001

Whaaaa! i wanna go!
I gots to work tho. :smt011

EWB, the northern side of Davenport is a popular yak surfing place, the surfers pretty much leave it to the yaks. It can be tough to find a spot to learn here in SC, as almost every place is either "no yaks" or has localism probs. The farther north you go from SC the less the localism is an issue. The beach south of HMB is a good place to look too.
I've been dying to get my 10' wavewitch out this year but just haven't made it. i used to surf it a bit when I was in SoCal, but there are a lot more open beachbreaks down there.

thanks sean. At the FW event someone said there was a yakker in the surf. It was just to the right (looking at the water) from the stairs. Is that the location you are talking about?

Why can't we all just get along???  :smt008

Yep. There was a guy in a surf show ripping it up pretty good that day. I know Mark at KC sometimes teaches there.

You won't have any problems at Cowells on a Wed. That place is like a parade of kooks and they'll probably assume you know what you're doing.
Lots of decent breaks between Watsonville and Monterey, too. But it's usually bigger too.
I like to play around at Del Monte beach at the bottom of Casa Verde Ave....nice and flat and less people to run over.

Thanks Sean and PK. I'll swing by Cowells and if its crazy or totally flat I'll head to Dport.

you'll have no problem with the kooks...it's the oldies that you worry about...

I would suggest that you go North or South. Stay out of Santa Cruz unless you are skilled, have a surf kayak, and/or are adept at martial arts. Surfers will not welcome you and if you are just learning, you are a potential hazard to all surfers in the water no matter what day it is. Territorial and aggressive are the norm here, take my advice and go to a less intense area.

Every sport has those nicknames. In road racing, people who don't know how to ride in a pace line and a pack and don't know the etiquette and endanger the rest of us we called "Fred"s or "squirrels".
