If you prefer a charcoal grill, I bought a Weber Performer about 6 months ago and I love it. Not quite as convenient as a gas grill, but the performer has gas ignition for your charcoal, and it's awesome. It also has a built in work table and charcoal storage and comes with baskets for indirect cooking and a hinged cooking grate in case you need to add more coals or stir the coals while cooking. As an added bonus I picked up a Smokenator smoker conversion that is made for this grill, which does a very nice job. Easy to insert when I want to smoke fish or other meats, and easy to remove when I just want to grill.

Personally I like Weber grills the most, but hate anything that is stainless steel.  For some reason my brain doesn't get that "it's hot!" vibe from stainless and I end up burning myself... :smt013  I upgraded the grates to cast iron, and they sure are sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!

From what i hear from others the egg is definitely a good investment. I've heard numerous people that love it to death with no problems. Next grill i'm going to buy for my father is a Big Green Egg. For what its worth. :smt001

No love for the old school, plain Weber kettle?  I see no reason to upgrade.

Love the old kettle style!  But are we talking BBQ's or Grills?

That BGE looks SWEEET!  :smt007

No doubt the Egg and other Charcoal grills do the job well. It's the prep time and clean up that drives people to more expensive but equally performing gas grills. So, as usual, you get to decide--more money up front and for gas or more labor each time you cook. There are no secrets here nor superiority of one to the other--other than charcoal grills contribute more to air pollution with all the prep burning and smoke. People will tell you the old charcoal grills are superior--just like some people claim the old cars are better. But it's nostalgia that makes them better not facts or unbiased assessment. Buy what you can afford and enjoy the heck out of it.

They do all that and bake, too.

I have a big fancy SS job sitting in the backyard, (was a gift).  Sprung a propane leak after a couple years and now it just sits there.

Yes charcoal takes about 10 minutes to prep...  there is that.

I can see the merits of insta-flame!  But it's not worth the hassle or cost at this juncture.

I'd spend the money on a good smoker before I'd buy another grill.

I bought a propane smoker (Master Chef 7-in-1) from Bass Pro shops on the recommendation of Molbasser. I believe I got the best smoker for me. Electric is a hassle with worries about rain and electrocution and shorts and for charcoal/wood--as you said "prep time". The propane smoker goes camping with me and doubles as a deep fryer as well--no electric or fuel worries--same propane for the BBQ, camp stove, the camp grill, and the main lantern. I smoke the Trout before they are cold. Consolidation of fuel sources--works for me. but there is no right answer for everyone--only trade-offs and choices. It's all good.
