Good stuff,

Thanks Guys   :smt006

Looking for the Gas grill, I'm always running a race at my house and really don't have the time for prep/clean up etc etc....

That egg thingy sure does look Kool though....  :smt004

I get to work with many grills at the Firehouses, and you can imagine that these guys would want the "Best Grill", being they will get a workout just about everyday.

They are nice, but I have not found a one that did not have issues with cold/hot spots or deteriorate faster than I thought they should.

most guys swear by porcelain, cast iron sounds good too,

maybe kill 2 birds and just go get the man grill at Costco...

 Keep the info coming...

  Thanks Again....

I bought a Traeger Pellet Grill/Smoker and have not looked back. All the flexibility of a gas grill (ready to put the meat on in 15 minutes) with the flavor and performance of cooking with wood.  You can control the temperature from about 180 all the way up to 450.  Want to do low and slow... set the temp and walk away.  Want to sizzle some burgers or steaks, crank it up.  Expensive but a good investment if you like to barbeque... and the cost of pellets is comparable to the equivalent cost of propane.  I bought the Traeger Texas Grill 0075 with the digital controller.

Eric, I forgot to mention those--really a gas grill using wood for flavor and they are probably these best of both it is true--no question. I use the second place option but might trade up one day--I have a cast iron box I put on the grill plates and fill with wood for a wood smoke BBQ (works fine it seems and I put aluminum tins under the rotisserie filled with fruit juice to steam  the meat) and the propane smoker has a fire box for wood.

Just smoke fresh caught trout whole (cleaned of course) for an hour with Alder wood smoke at about 200 degrees F--you'll never go back to pan fried trust me.

Traeger doesn't use gas at all ... the fire pot is fired by an electric heating element and a combustion fan.

I used the cast iron wood chip box in my gas grill for years as well.  Worked fine but takes a while for the wood chips to start smoking.  The Traeger is probably ready to cook even faster than that setup.

Cooked Papa Murphy's pizzas in it the other night... took about the same amount of time as cooking in the oven but with a nice wood smoke flavor infused in the za.  Nummy.

Speaking of wood chips my parents just recently turned me on to bbqing with the oak chips from the wine making. A unique tasty flavor is imparted.

Did you know that Weber bbq s were originaly halves of a buoy from a factory called the Weber Bros Metal Works. Some worker took them home and made it into a grill.

He then went on to buy the company.

Kinda comes full circle. :smt004

I love my big Weber gas grill.  A lot of people who try Webers get very loyal.  They cook well and last forever.  Mine isn't stainless steel, but it seems like a very high quality surface.  I keep it covered and the outside looks nearly new even though it's at least 10 years old.

New Webers are awfully expensive, so I haunted Craigslist.  You have to move fast on Webers that are good deals.  I see some on there right now... If people tell you to come by tomorrow, a neighbor will wander over and buy it tonight.  That happened to me 3 times!

About gas--I've read that in blind taste tests, people just can't tell the difference between gas and charcoal grilled foods.  The grilled taste comes from high heat and vaporized juices, not from smoke.  (Low and slow BBQ is a different story).

The best thing is I probably grill 10 times as much as when I used charcoal.  At least.  It's not just the lighting charcoal that was a pain, it was the clean-up and the keeping charcoal in stock.  The downside is my grill isn't helpful for smoking.  I'd like to get a Big Green Egg for BBQ and smoking fish.  Someday...

I like having a side burner for sauces, or just for cooking outside when the house is hot, but not everybody needs one.

Main thing is beware of eye candy grills that look good and cook bad!  Check out reviews like the online Consumer Reports.

i believe a properly outfitted backyard has both gas and charcoal bbq's. propane puts off moisture as a byproduct when burning. charcoal is a nice dry heat and imparts better flavor.

I have the Weber gas, I think it's the best one out there for the $. This one is about 15 years old and I had to replaced the "flavor bars" once (went with the SS bars) . Don't think you'll go wrong with the Weber.

the weber Q grill is the s%$t.They make three sizes, gas, charcoal and even electric. It is portable and cooks very even with the cast grill. The only con is that a beer can chicken wont fit under the lid. The larger sizes have a center burner bar with seperate control. I have used my grill almost every day for the last year since we drove to baja and it has had no problems. I have 5 different BBQs and this is my go to grill. I have the large propane bottle hose, but use disposable bottles for tailgating or setting it on a picnic table at the beach. It can be set on a wood table with no fear of fire. It was the best 140$ I have ever spent on a BBQ

I've had several grills.  Gas are convenient, but to be safe, they have a lot of air going through them.  This makes for dried out Q.    I've settled on the BGE and find that the food has a nice smoke flavor.  The meats are moist.  There's something about the egg that keeps the moisture inside.

With an electric coil, it's not to much to start.  Shut it down and much of the coals are good for the next cook out.

I recently got one of these (bsteves turned me on to it) ... http://www.chargriller.com/store/product_info.php?cPath=21&products_id=29&osCsid=a0a4ab618dc72f0bbc4b3015dbf262d3

Gas on one side, charcoal on the other.  Oh ... and you can install (and I did) a smoke box off the charcoal side.  I've only used the grill side so far, but hope to change that and do some slow BBQ this weekend.

I have 3 Weber grills! 2 gas & 1 charcoal.  My small camping gas grill, my standard charcoal "Round"Weber,(I use to BBQ turkeys in) and, the one I use the most, an old red top gas grill, I got from my folks when they upgraded to a huge SS char-b-q from Costco.   Dad doesn't like his new huge BBQ compared to the one he gave me. :smt003.

Personally I like Weber grills the most, but hate anything that is stainless steel.  For some reason my brain doesn't get that "it's hot!" vibe from stainless and I end up burning myself... :smt013  I upgraded the grates to cast iron, and they sure are sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!

You can't ever beat Weber.  Though I can't afford weber - they have the least flareups, etc.  :)  I might have a walmart brand grill - but you've seen how my tri tip sammies turn out...  :smt003
