Capitola Boat and Bait website is reporting good striper fishing again, Brendan from here is on there site again..

In bigger news they are reporting a 12ft Great White Shark siting yesterday...

Just a heads up..

I had a peaceful day out yesterday, no fish though, few good bites..

from capitolas report:
Josh found a couple that Brandon did not yet haul into his magic kayak. He actually caught four - he released the first two. Same thing - New Brighton, live sardines. How, you wonder? Imagine if you will that Josh can cast REALLY far. That is one scenario where Josh could have caught these beauties.

Kurtis can also cast real far. He caught one, same area, same bait, a bit smaller than Josh’s biggest one, but larger than the smaller one. He also saw a 12 foot great white shark while he was fishing around there - it might have been the one that has been around here for a while that they call Matilda. He didn’t get close enough to ask though.

That would be nice,  but you better check those regs. I'm pretty sure catching a   gws  is  illegal, even from a yak.

I have no desire to catch any type of shark what so ever.

It was just spotted yesterday, thats all.

Great White Sharks are protected.-Mr. Graysuit is probably always near shore where ever the furbags are and coincidentally that is where we kayakers fish. GWS are thought to be territorial and, like other predators, probably cruise their territory looking for food opportunities incessantly I would guess though we still don't know a lot about them. I would bet that for every kayaker sighting there are dozens and dozens of times kayakers are perused without our even knowing it. Most apex predators are very curious about the goings-on in their territory.

Well, it would be really hard to pass up a catch and release opportunity like that if the situation  presented itself.I'm pretty sure anything like that is illegal, tho you could always say that you hooked it by accident.

Nothing like a GWS report before a weekend when the surf is up.  :smt002

GWs attack a kayak about once or twice a decade--and even then only the kayak is damaged. They attack surfers several times a year--a lot more. I am not worried about a GWS attacking my kayak--the odds are far greater I'll be injured or killed driving to or from my fishing statistically or catch the H1N1 Swine flu and die let alone the 50,000 a year who die from flu in the U.S. One of the favorite topics of Freakanomics and other experts is the inability of human beings to judge risk rationally and logically. Of course now that I wrote this, I'll definitely be attacked out there--but heck it beats being snuffed out by a Chevy Suburban driven by a Soccer Mom on a cell phone on 101.

I should say i didn't post this to strike fear in all who kayak, i live in this area, im on the water every week once or twice. I was out there that day too. And ill be out there this evening if things go well. :)

I just posted it more because its fascinating, its a amazing dinosaur like creature, and hearing one is spotted is exciting.... Kinda like seeing a wild lion in Africa, or monkeys in Costa Rica, its just plain old cool! There everywhere out there, its there home, just something cool about someone seeing one.

Good find...Been there and read that a few years ago and said so on this board a couple of years ago.

I used it to base my contention (not broadly received) that the GWS kayak attacks on kayaks are mostly not cases of mistaken identity regarding food--but rather an apex predator fending off a threat to its territory. IMHO that's why they don't return and attack the kayaks in the water--they've already made their point. There is the theory that they are taking a sample bite but that doesn't fit in my mind--they don't take just a bite they bite several times and shake. Of course maybe they realize what they bit was hard and are trying to bite off a piece but they are very sensitive to smell of flesh and blood--they must know immediately it isn't food. I am not sure my theory works with surfers though==but that is something 1/2 the size or less of a kayak.

Go ahead call me crazy but it's logical and simple in a way that nature usually is--that's usually (I believe) why Grizzlies attack people but with Polar Bear it isn't--Polar bears are so much bigger than us they have no fear of us I think--they are just hungry. That's my story and I'm sticking to it  :smt003
