I drove to Shelter Cove today to get some work done on a job I'm overseeing, and, wouldn't you know, I got an opportunity to go kayakfishing.   :smt001

There weren't many whitecaps, but the water was choppy and unorganized with rogue sets breaking around the kelp beds off the hotels.  I worked that area for a couple hours and had good luck right off with a greenling, a few blacks, and a just-legal ling (the best kind!).  I thought I was in for a fish-fest but I only went on to catch a couple more blacks and then the bite went absolutely dead.  I'd even pinned on an octopus that the ling had puked up and I went biteless for like an hour.  I finally brought up another legal greenling and called it a day.

What I realized out there is that I am whole from the fishing, not from the catching.  It's too easy to get bogged down in all that other stuff.   :smt001

Glad you can get time OTW especially at Shelter Cove!  Thank you for the report and pictures Eric.  I'll go back to Shelter Cove sometime in August.

Nice little report. Great photos. The one of the "Dodge" is excellent - notice the "No Parking - Fire Lane signs!"

Beautiful pictures...

I hear you on the fishing versus the catching...my Dad drilled that into me when I was growing up and I would get impatient and frustrated on slow days...that attitude has always stuck with me, and I look forward to trying to share it with my daughter when she is big enough to start coming out OTW with me...or at least when her Mom thinks she is... :smt002

Thanks for the report and pictures.

Sincerely,

Jim

Thanks for the report Abking. Your great attitude towards this sport is always appreciated. It shows in each report and is contagious. It isn't always about the numbers of fish we catch, it's more about the quality time we spend fishing.

Well Eric, I awoke this morning worried and apprehensive about a project I need to move forward on. You words and pics help put things in perspective. Thanks

I was thinking basically this same sentiment last Sunday. Paddling has always renewed me, but the caffeine-like fishing bug sometimkes overwhelms it and the important part is lost in the rush to stalk and capture something. I find focusing on all the paddling stuff and putting the actual fishing last on the launch list has actually improved my catch rate this year, in addition to making my trips much more fun all around.
Of course, catching at least one good fish a session ain't bad at all either!

Nice pics AK. The first one is great, with the fog sea.

The last one is pure North Coast. I imagine the dialogue like this:

"So, hey man, where's your truck?"
"Oh, Um (thinks hard)...Oh yeah, I got stuck at Shelter Cove like yesterday, y'know when we had that party."
"Dude, that was three weeks ago!"
"Oh man, wow. Hey, can I have a ride? By the way, when did you get those new rims?"
"Um, a few weeks ago. Dude, I totally just found 'em on a derilict somebody left at the beach."
