Arriving at 5am at MBK I was first to arrive. While waiting for the rest of the crue a got a head start setting up the Alien Yak. Doug (Marmite) Was next to show up then Eugene (e2g),Scott (greatbass2) and some new faces...Being the first to Arrive I was last to launch.  Scott and crew went towards the red can off of Cannery Row, Eugene trolled north in the shallows, and Doug went strait out near the barge and drifted North. I decided I was going to go straight to the Yellow buoy to look for bait in 40' of water. It was about eight O'clock and the tide was going out and i was ready to jig up what ever bait that would hit the sabikis I was using, #8. But first I was going to drop down a previously frozen 9" horsemackrell that i caught out of Capitola Pier a couple of weeks before, on a halibut stinger rig, 30lb. mono leader with a #3/0 octopus hook and a #4 stinger.

It wasn't more than a few minutes when my rod tip just started to bend, looking like I got snag on the bottom I check the sonar to see if there was any structure, but there were none. I Picked up my rod and felt like my line was going through some floating kelp when i realized it was a head shake. I wasn't quite sure what it was till it started to take its distinctive butt run...pause,run...Pause and that's when I gain back some line and saw the color I haven't seen in a long time. Big Butt colors :smt003 I new I had to use the gaff on this one cause I have a little net. I got the fish close enough to end the battle. I secured it with the game clip and Doug and Eugene arrive just in time to take some pictures and Eugene letting me borrow his fish bat to calm the beast! Lots of thanks to Eugene and Doug for the assist on getting some of my stuff that ended up in the water. But most of all I like the but that ended up in my yak :smt003

Here's a pics I got with my broken Kodak camera and i think Marmite will post the others that he got.

It works!

Alex always tells me that he's gonna get a big brute of a fish before we leave to fish or at every derby.  I always say, "Yeh, yeh, Alex you always tell me that".  But this time he didn't say anything.  And see, Alex, it works in reverse.

I'm so glad you got this special wedding gift from the fish gods.  (He go so excited from the pump of adrenalin, that for 30 minutes after the battle he was still saying his stomach was upset and he felt like puking.)

Here you go with the pics.  Sorry a little dark but the best I could get.

(I'll get the other pics to you later)
