Shimmy and I found the opportunity to escape and fish the Mendocino county coast today.

Perfect ocean conditions.  Bite was hot early on during the latter part of the incoming tide, then it was a slow pick.   Both of us had fishfinder malfunctions so we had to rely on previously plotted gps waypoints to find structure.

We both had plenty of action.  Didn't find the vermillions today but plenty of ling action and the normal assortment of rockfish.  I released 5 lings... only one shorty... the rest in the mid 20's to low 30 inch range.  Scored one nice fatty ling at 37 inches which went home with me... felt good to get on one of those again!

This was my first kayak fishing trip of the year, finally! :smt003

Bad news was no FF for either of us, so all my saved waypoints did no good. My problem turned out to be wire failure at a splice. This was after I tested it last nite, oh well. :smt013

Good news I beta tested my new jig design and it got bit every drop until I lost it, looks like a winner.

Erik and I had double hookups on lings at one point. I kept one ling and some blues. It was a pretty good mix of fish, but there was a serious shortage of reds, probably because we were fishing blind.

Forget the fish - congrats on finally getting out on your yaks, fellas.

I know from my little razor blade mishap last year how agonizing it is to be going through kayak fishing withdrawls!  :smt010

When Erik and Shimmy get together it usually results in big fish.  Nice ling!

Glad to see you guys getting out.
