After meeting up with the FishMaster and Ebjaywaygibehreidfkdfjhsdhdjdflkjsdifewrjdslfjsdf (phil)   :smt064 in SC we headed up through the drizzly fog and arrived at BH around 6AM to an all too familiar scene of NCKA'ers hauling gear down to the water, getting suited up and greeting one another.  Hauled our gear down to the beach and got some good tips on exit/entry for the jaws.

Launching was a piece of cake, except I thought my rudder was down and I did a full 180 and was heading straight back at the beach!  :smt053 Kicked down the rudder, and turned back TOWARDS the ocean, and caught up the boys and headed out into open water.  Pretty chilly without any sun light, fog rolled in and drizzled for about 20 mins on us. :smt009

Fishing was slow, but somewhat steady for the first couple hours.  C&R'ed couple gophers, small cabbie, and a china.  Followed Adam around looking for cabbies and lings and saw Eric pulling up a REALLY sweet vermilion.  :smt007  Had a huge tug on my line and I snapped my 40# braid loosing a favorite megabait  :smt010

Got too cold for me, so Andy and I worked our way back in.  Timed it right and we both sailed right on into shore, no problem  :smt002  We took a trip through the tide pools, Andy pulled up some urchin and mussels, later tossed on the BBQ.

After watching the Yack Surf Landing Show, which some fared better than others  :smt044  We had a fun shore lunch, cooking up some of Andy and Eric's treats for the hungry anglers coming out of the surf.  Tossed a few beers back and started hearing everyone's story of the day.

Good times!   :smt004

Where are the pictures of the grinding shorebreakers that make us look brave for fishing this special place? Those ankle slappers don't do us justice.

Yeah, I hope FishMaster1 got some pics of the , say, 5 foot faced piledrivers that dominated the launch. Timing was/is everything.

Great day for me out there. First to arrive (who sleeps before an opener?) I spent some time watching the sets roll into the beach. Launched in the "first wave" with ChuckE, Ariel, Lino and Kimo. I fished up northwards over spotty reef with swimbaits. Still I landed a total of 12 fish with good variety. Among the released fish were a legal ling and an 18" cabb. I lost two other fish, one felt like a decent ling. I kept a couple of chunky Black RF and one Copper, each about 2-3 pounds.
I'm beginning to have renewed respect for the lowly Black rockfish. Hard hitting for their size, decent fight, easy on the table, and a high rate of reproduction :smt004. What's not to like?

A yearling sea lion actually came up under my kayak and hit it pretty hard, enough to make a lound noise & seriously jostle the boat. That little SOB :smt011. I had to paddle over to my NCKA posse to lose him. Fortunately, once he saw my backup was 8 other paddlers he probably thought "um,...these guys look serious. I'll bet one of 'em's  got a harpoon in his pocket..." and he split.

Nice conditions out there considering. We had wet fog, cold drizzle, overcast, and ended the day with very enjoyable "warm but muted, give-you-the-worst-sunburn-of your-life-if-you-underestimate-it" California sunshine. Almost like the sun is shining through a soft focus lens that magnefies it but keeps you from feeling it sear you.
A nice "hang with the crew" shore lunch, then home to clean fish and gear. Dredged two black RF fillets with egg & italian breadcrumbs & baked them with roasted veggies.
Summer has arrived!
I'm looking forward to the next time already.
