The combination of knowing those guys are going hunting and this
article http://www.nytimes.com/2005/09/30/travel/30pig.html makes me interested in this pig hunting thing.

(you might have to register to read that article, but it is free).

I don't think I have the time to actually do it. Except for a healthy fear of poison oak, and other hunters putting a bullet in me by mistake, I certainly have the inclination tho, so I'd like to learn more.

I'm hoping to get invited to a pig hunt next time around (hint - hint)....after trying wild bore meat (over rice) from Joe and Leony, I think I'm in love  :smt007

Problem is that I don't think my 800 round Red Ryder BB gun may not be sufficient enough to bring down a big bore  :smt067 But I'am a good shot....I've killed many coca cola cans in the back yard  :smt066....and let's just say that the raccoons don't come around anymore  :smt002

What a quality article........... :smt023
I love her last quote............ "I don't believe in killing animals for recreation," she said. "But if you use them as game, that's what the cycle of life is all about."
Thank you for sharing.

I would love to hunt boar as well.  I've thought about it and I think I could muster of the courage to hit one.  Deer on the hand, I don't think so, I have watched too much bambi with my son.  Plus The meat is off the hook.  I also think knowing the boar will have no problem running me down helps lessen the guilt of killing a land roaming animal. Fish on the other hand I have no problem.  go figure.

Maybe we should set up a pig hunt this winter sometime when the fishing is slow.

Have guns... like pork...  will travel...

My buddy Edsel went to Henry Coe last year on a mountain bike - camping-fishing trip up to one of the many lakes/ponds in the area...and on the way to one of the ponds, he was chased by baby wild bores  :smt118 ...he nearly soiled himself  :smt088

this will be one of the places I plan to hit in the future.... :camp

I have also mountain biked into coe (to fish), and seen pig, turkey, and tarantulas.  The pig are scary, the come through the reeds pretty fast and they make a lot of noise.

Even tho the pig season is open 365 with no bag limits, I'm sure there are issues with the guns themselves. especially in a state park inside the city limits.

I just don't know, it's all new to me.  I guess I'll have to do some googling this weekend.

I been out hog hunting public lands more often than I can count.... without much success.  If you want a real chance, you need to find access to private land.  Unfortunately, most land owners are either wise to the fact they can charge hunters a fee to hunt... or they just don't want guns on their property.

If anyone here can hook me up with access to private land with hogs, I'd be more than grateful.  I'd be happy to share the meat with you and the land owner.  Heck, I'd even cook it or make sausages for you guys!

World's Shortest and Best Fairy Tale
Once upon a time, a guy asked a girl "Will you marry me?"
The girl said, "NO!"
And the guy lived happily ever after and went fishing, hunting and
Kayaked a lot and drank beer whenever he wanted. :secret

'Bambi' was forbidden material in my household, and I still have never seen it.

Chuck's assessment matches the impression I get of the hunting out here.  Pretty much has to be done on private land at considerable expense.

I knew somebody on here would know the story. I wonder how skyboy and lingcodlonny are doing. I guess they got the hookup.

well, definitely there are hogs at the lakes in henry coe. maybe bring your float tube, rod, and a bow?  :smt002   fish for bass and when the hogs come down to drink, robin hood time? you'd be safe out in the lake too.

I've been looking for pigs on public land for the last fwe years. You can get information on hunting pigs from DFG. They even have a free guide to download. The story is always the same... find private land. The going rate seems to be $300. I just can't bring myself to hire a "guide" for $300 to take me out and point and say "that one". There are even some places that have fenced in areas so you are guaranteed to see pigs. You may as well go cow hunting in a pasture, it would take about the same amount of tracking skill. At any rate as far as I know hunting is not allowed on any state parks. The areas that you can hunt are wildlife areas, forest service land and BLM. Unfortunately pigs are usually listed as transients in these areas. Apparently there is some public land around Big Sur that has pigs and Mendocino Nat. Forest has some. On a kayaking note I am very interested in buying a prowler 13 for fishing and am thinking that the olive one would make a nice base to camoflage for use duck hunting. Every time I look there are just so many more uses for kayaks. And to think I was almost ready to apply for a $40,000 loan to buy a fishing boat that would be okay in the ocean and useless in ponds, mountain lakes, streams,  rivers....
And you could hear me screaming a mile away as I was headed out for the door....
