But was a nice day to get out and paddle with my buddy Stoggie!  We launched after tying some riggs and headed out in zero swell glassy like water with sever overcast clouds keeping the sun from hitting us.

We paddled out around the kelp to the right side of the pier and lazily trolled chovies off the bottom heading twards SC.  I got one brown RF, an underling, 2 octopi, some weird fish I haven't seen before, and one scratched bait.

So, not much to report, but here are some pics!

Always a great time on time water with al.
The fishing was slow just caught a octopus.
I heard somewhere that they made good ling bait, so i sent him back down to no avail.

It's always hit or miss in sc or capitola.
After al got a 'but on friday we thought it worth a try.
But
I think they heard scallen was back in town and after he caught their KING last week they got scared and split.

At least we were on otw.

Thanks again al

Stoggie

Al - Way to get out on the water yet again and enjoy life to the fullest. I have been following your posts lately and thoroughly enjoying the enthusiasm you have been bringing. I am also jealous as I have been stuck at work and baseball with the boy on the weekends, although I thoroughly enjoy my time with my son. I have been itching to get out and go rock fishing for the first time. Is capitola a good launch spot for someone without ocean experience, or is Monterey better. I want to start out easy, but have a chance to hook something. I am thinking of making a trip in the next week or so if the weather permits.

Thanks again for the report and pics,
Ray

Sweet water guys!

Raydog, capitola is a easy launch 90% of the time, whereas MBK in Monterey is an easy launch 99.99% of the time.

or you can take your kid to a place with signs like this, just dont tell Mom

I think it's a little behbey ling, as SC might say...   :smt003

Nice work, Al and Stoggie - after scoring the flatties you guys were due for a more diverse, nature-appreciation type of trip anyway.   :smt002

You have been getting out alot, Al - I like it; I like it a lot.   :smt001

Is that weird fish a "Sarcastic Fringehead"? (No kidding, nominated by Milton Love for California's State Fish).

Great Picture!

Nah, I think it's a type of kelpfish. Kelpfish are actually pretty common--we just use lures/baits/hooks that are too big to catch them consistently. Plus, those fringeheads have really small mouths (no sarcasm).

Hey Al
I noticed it looked like you drove on the beach next to the pier to launch.........I didnt know you could do that.
Also, where did you park and is there a place to park that would allow you to come in after the sun goes down?
Thanks, Colombus

Yeah, we commonly launch right side of the pier.  Its one of the easiest shore launches around.  Parking however, is another matter.  You cant park anywhere close most of the time, they are all permit or metered spots.  But, up the way, on the second ridge, up the hill and to the left of Shadowbrook, there is a "few" free parking spots if you get there early enough.  Little bit of a walk, but no biggie.
