Its interesting how these threads wind around.

In fact a few months ago, the Press Democrat had a headline saying just that for Santa Rosa.  They had their lowest crime stats in 20 or 25 years.

Crime statistics are a joke, and Santa Rosa (I am an Bennett Valley and Windsor ex-resident) is famous for manipulating the stats. The Law enforcement agencies MUST report violent crimes, but crimes against property are rarely reported. That is how they can have reports that  murder and rape is up but thefts are down.

Police departments ( encouraged by elected officials and Chambers of Commerce ) make reporting property crimes difficult. There's no money in it. It lowers property values. Bad for business. You want to report a car theft? Start walking to the SRPD, but you better only show up between 9am and 5 pm, and be prepared to wait. Can't remember the license plate number or the VIN? Be prepare to walk home and get it. SRPD WON'T look it up on their computer. ( I've had a 1991 RX7 and a '65 Corvette stolen in SR city limits on separate occasions and different sides of the city, both alarmed and one was in driveway, one was in the garage.) The reason that part of Roseland is out of city limits is so they can show higher "in city" property values and lower crime rates. Santa Rosa has also priced "most" of the crooks out of city limits. Not many scumbags can afford $600,000 3/2 bedrooms homes.

I double dog dare you to park your car downtown Santa Rosa, even across from City Hall or the Federal building with anything of more than $25 value on the front seat. Don't think of leaving a cheap iPod Nano in the center console. Zapp! It's GONE and you get a broken $150 window to boot! Leave your GPS in plain sight at the fairgrounds parking lot. You'll have a broken window and a ripped up truck. A case of bottled water in the back of your truck at Coddingtown. It won't be there 5 minutes later. Don't even think about leaving anything of value along the Russian River in your truck.

I only felt safe in 2 spots in Sonoma County, when I lived next to the Chief of Police for Cotati in Santa Rosa and he parked his police car in the driveway next door, and when we lived in Sebastopol and we had a sign on the gate that said " all loose dogs will be shot". We had people (even Jehovah Witnesses) that wouldn't drive up the driveway for fear of us "gun-totin' rednecks."

Most people feel it is too much work to do the B.S. paperwork, that will result in NO CHANGES in patrols or enforcement.

What we need is more people with "permit to carry" licenses and outsource our convicted prisoners to North Korea. 15 years of hard labor for illegal entry into the country, 20 years of hard labor for theft of 20lbs would change crime rates.

ah..this happened to me done in Seal Beach. We were surfing and we left our towels and shoes in the beach. I noticed this guy and his gf seating down by our stuff.

I know what they were trying to do. So, I kept an eye on them as I was teaching my gf, then, how to swim. All of a sudden, I saw our towels being thrown back to our shoes.

I came out of the surf running towards them. Confronted them. The guy was saying he thought that they were discarded items in the beach. I told them...thats all BS and he was a thief!. I flagged down a lifeguard on a 4wheel motorcycle and got them kicked out of the beach....

that made my day...

You got to be very careful these days,I caught a shoplifter and he turned around and suckerpunched me when I was being a nice guy to him. I threw him to the ground and he pulled a knife on me. I took it away from him, pinned him to the ground and let my nose bleed all over his face until the cops arrived. When they got there they asked him if he was alright!!! They laughed their asses off when he said it was MY blood. What was it worth? I should have just let him go and suffer the karma that would surely follow him.

Not sure why I haven't found this thread before, nice to have a rainy day to spend indoors.    For what it is worth I really enjoyed reading this thread and found the way it evolved to be facinating!

Regarding scum bag criminals I believe strongly that as much as I respect what our law enforcement community does for us, there is no doubt that we are all now partners in their effort to keep our communities safe and to hold our fellow citiczens to lawful standards.   Unfortunately we live in a time when criminals have been made to be heros and hard working "stiffs" are to be pittied.  Who do you think our average teenager would rather grow up to be now, a rap/rock star or a doctor?  Easy money baby, that it is what it is all about!
Then there is the ten ton elephant in the room, meth.  I would love to know what the percentage of crimes perpetrated by people on meth would be these days, when it comes to theft it is most likey 75% or more.  This is a drug that obviously removes peoples ability to care about right or wrong.  You need only go to walmart late at night and look into the eyes of a person to know that they are souless.
When it comes to my opinion on taking the law into your own hands I say each situation calls for a unique perspective and safety of your family comes first, end of story.  Any time you do anything to put them in danger you are as much at fault as anybody.  That being said I have had many opportunities to use a citiczens arrest on a criminal, and have never had it come back to haunt me.  I have friends in law enforcement and totally respect what they do for a living, but I also take responsibility for myself my family and my property.   A person hurts one of my family members or gets caught stealing from me, and a court appearance would be a best case scenario for them!  A criminal needs to know that there are more consequences to his or her actions besides three meals a day and free medical and dental (that I pay more than my share to provide).
Like many of you here, I hope to go through life in peace and without problems, but I am ever aware.
