Might have to get a hotel room, girlfriend recently had back surgery, and is planning to come to the event to support me.  Not sure if she can sleep in the truck yet, but we can hang until the fat lady sings, then go to the room. By fat lady, I in no way imply that any or all women associated with any event I or we may be involved with is in or was in any way, fat.

ChuckE,

Few questions for ya.

1. I have a friend who would like to go, can he just show up, pay and register?

2. I have never fished half moon bay (not even from a PB). I hear there are some areas to watch/avoid when launching? does anybody have any info on this? Also are there any other areas to avoid?

Great Questions!

Yes... Friends and Family are always welcome.  They don't need to pay or register unless they're competing in the derby.  It's just good to have a headcount for the BBQ.

The launch site is totally protected inside of the harbor.  You can fish inside the harbor where it'll be flat as a lake.  Lots of sardines in the harbor.  There are also reports of a few halibut being caught in the harbor too.  Total beginners may want to consider staying on the inside if the swell looks too big outside of the harbor.

Outside of the harbor, you have some choices.  You can go east (left) towards the beach and fish the flat sandy bottom for a chance at halibut and maybe a striper.  Tons of sardines there as well.  The area is mostly protected from a N or NW swell like is predicted for this Saturday.

If go west/nw outside the harbor, you're entering the reef area that holds rockfish and lings.  It has historically been the best place to fish, but beware of the shallow spots which can produce breakers and catch you offguard.  There's no need to go to far out.  One of the biggest lings ever caught in the derby was caught near the rock jetty.  If you go too far out, you run the risk of getting too close to infamous Mavericks -- the location of the annual big surf contest.  Not good!

The area around the harbor mouth and straight outside (south) are high traffic areas for power boats.  Please avoid fishing that area.

A GPS is a must in the case of fog.  If you don't have one, you should pair up with someone who has one and stay close.  VHF radios should be set to or scan channel 69 - for derby info.  If you don't have a VHF radio, you need to pair up with some who has one.

Another question for ChuckE,

Will it be okay to fish with my outriggers?  Just want to make sure I don't get DQ'd for getting the biggest sardine.  If it's not ok I'll keep it at home.
