This was Nathans year to fish Big Sur.  We were all set for the opener.  Then came the weather reports, and the maternal override.  His first trip down south will not be during a storm.

So we stayed local and went to coral street.  I caught a mixed bag of gophers, browns, blacks.  One underling, one underCabbie.  He nailed....one puny gopher that crapped on him to boot. :smt003

We at least realize that as windy as it was on us 5/1, it must have been a gale down in BS.  So maybe this was the best decision.  Sackyaks report quickly showed us we screwed up big time. :smt010

So Saturday night we decide to not be defeated and return to coral street.  5/3 we arrive and Nathan gets to watch some teenage girl get in a scuba suit.  His day is off to a fine start. :smt007  We had a DFG guy check us out, actually looked at my license up close and asked my birthdate, so be sure you are in total compliance fellas.  I got a mixed bag of blues, browns and gophers.  Nathan is doing better but not by much.  He does finally get a nice cabbie.  He is stoked!

We get home and clean the cab, and in the stomach he finds:

an octopus, a broken spiral shell, a long strand of seaweed and a perfect 1.5 inch abalone.  I took a pic, but the cable is at work. I will get it up 5/4.

not a bad start after all :smt004

Nice.   A buddy of mine speared a cabbie recently with a big chunk of ab meat in its belly that he thought was from a keeper ab.  His idea was that the cabs probably wait until an ab is stretching between two rocks and then try to knock it off and eat it whole.  That's a big lunch for a 4-lb cabezon.

Doesn't come out - they dissolve everything.  I've found a whole 2.5" ab w/ shell in a cab stomach.  I've also found a 5" ab meat in a big cab.

Way to go, Nathan - always investigate those cab stomachs!   :smt001

Had an Island shell lure that worked wonders.  Always thought it imitated fish.  Now I know they are actually after the shell. :smt003

Coral st. huh, I have fished there for the past four years and never met any ncka members there.
Good to hear you found the fish, who would have guessed the wind would lay down and allow anyone to fish big sur.

did you eat the ab :smt003

no, didnt eat it but did add it to the future list of asian partially digested delicacies!

Scott, Nathans a natural HAM so no problems getting him to do handstands.  The cocky little !~@#$$ was standing up the other day to make his body a sail in the wind!

I remember seeing him do full handstands outside Stillwater last fall. And the water was not still.

Sounds like you guys had a fun weekend.Cool stomach contents.Sakyak's cabby spit up a brittle star and I found two more small brittle stars and a kelp crab in the ling from Sunday.

Maybe he's onto something with the "Madusa Lure". :smt002
