The Carlisle = POC!

I bought one and it froze.  Returned it to REI.  The second one froze on me also after a few uses.  Complete junk, going back to REI.  It'd be funny if it weren't so critical

Yep, Those suck.I bought one made by Scotty for Wildwasser that rocks. It has the metal rod and pumps a higher volume.Your pump should also have a cage over the intake to prevent kelp chunks and other debris from clogging it.

This is the all plastic model.  The internal rod looks like black plastic PVC.  This model is not just Carlisle, also branded under other names.

Same here.  Mine came from NRS, I think and froze up also.

The yellow and red one you see at various places, (Aquan for one) seems better quality.

I had one like that from Seattle Sports. I seemed to have lost it.
Think I left it in one the kayaks I sold last year.

Glad I never had to use it in an emergency. Thanks for the warning.

I'm left wondering what is freezing them up. I would imagine it must be salt lock. Saltwater dries and cements it together?

Thanks for the info.  I just saw this pump on their ad earlier this week for around $32 bucks.  I think I'll pick one up this weekend.

I have this one as well and its been a rock.  In fact I lost it in a surf wipe out and it washed up about a half hour later in fine working order.

I am trying to picture the scenario where it would be necessary to pump water (by hand) from the inside of your SOT kayak hull.
I guess it might be easier to do if you have an easily-accessible center hatch. But otherwise, it would be awfully difficult to climb onto the bow and pump water from the main hatch...without flipping over or already being IN the water.

Has anybody ever had to bail water from inside the hull with one of those pumps?
Because I don't have a pump, but I'll get one if it is going to help save my life. Maybe I'll just get one of those long super-soaker waterguns and it'll serve 2 purposes: bailing water from inside the hull AND blasting friends when they try to pose for fish pics!

I weight 280 and my tarpon 160 had a rated weight of 375.  The drain plug on the tarpon is on the rear, and if the boat is loaded, can be at or under the waterline.  It also doesnt alway make the greatest seal.  I was fishing Big Sur and had a truly awesome stringer.  That was in the tankwell and I figure between me, my gear and the stringer, we appoached the max weight.  On my paddle in I noted the kayak reacting sluggish, popped the middle hatch to see a decent amount of water.  Grabbed the pump and cleared the water in a few minutes.  I still crashed on the return, but at least I had a fighting chance.

Then SCXfactor wiped out.  PJ and I grabbed his floundering yak and pulled it on shore.  One of his rod holder caps had come off and his yak had lots of water in it.  On the rocks with high surf, pumping the water out seemed easier than trying to roll it on rocks.

so used it twice in one trip!

We actually practiced this in SBD's FW101 class last year and, at least for me, it wasn't that difficult.  Of course it didn't mimic the kinds of conditions that we might experience on the ocean but having the piece of mind knowing that it can be done is invaluable.

As for the pump, I believe that is the link I used in Noodleboy's thread about electric bilge pumps.  I personally don't have any experience with this pump, just the first one I came across and posted it.

I can think of three:

-Worn scuppers or bow or keel, from dragging over rocks and sand, etc causing a leak.

-Shark teeth punctures

-You flip or take a wave with a hatch open

Far fetched, perhaps?  Yet it happens.

With my Manta Ray there's a small hatch that's a perfect pump point.
