OK. I need to vent. I was waiting in line at the local cable company  for over an hour just to pay the stupid bill. When I finally made it to the front of the line and squared my account, I walked back to my truck. I was about to leave, when a passerby stopped to show me that I had overlooked where another cable customer had backed her car into my truck.  :smt010 Too lazy to drive 50 feet to exit the lot, she decided to do a U-turn out of her parking spot and tagged me on the left rear panel. In fact, I think I even remember seeing her leave the lot but didn't think much of it. No license number, only that it was a black SUV. 500 bucks soon to exit my pockets.  :smt013 :smt013

Hell if she paid or did some business at the same place as you I would have the cops ask for the names of all the people that came into the office the hour or so before you left. Should be a short list of ppl with a black SUV. Do they have any parking lot video cameras. Sucks regardless :smt010

Damn Howard, that sucks man. I HATE dealing w/the cable company. But maybe they can help you figure out who did it. Hopefully karma will strike the irresponsible driver.

Yeah a little research could help, but I doubt the cable company would relase information to you, but if you get the PD involved they could help. Maybe

So sorry about your truck Hojo. Man that sucks big time. I hope you find the
person who did it. You shouldn't have to pay for that person's mistake.

That's really crap, Hojo.  I've been there, unfortunately.  AARRGGHH.  Too bad no plates for the SUV.  Anyways, the driver should have stopped, under Cal. Veh. Code 20002, which provides:

(a) The driver of any vehicle involved in an accident resulting only in damage to any property, including vehicles, shall immediately stop the vehicle at the nearest location that will not impede traffic or otherwise jeopardize the safety of other motorists. Moving the vehicle in accordance with this subdivision does not affect the question of fault. The driver shall also immediately do either of the following:

 (1) Locate and notify the owner or person in charge of that property of the name and address of the driver and owner of the vehicle involved and, upon locating the driver of any other vehicle involved or the owner or person in charge of any damaged property, upon being requested, present his or her driver's license, and vehicle registration, to the other driver, property owner, or person in charge of that property. The information presented shall include the current residence address of the driver and of the registered owner. If the registered owner of an involved vehicle is present at the scene, he or she shall also, upon request, present his or her driver's license information, if available, or other valid identification to the other involved parties.

 (2) Leave in a conspicuous place on the vehicle or other property damaged a written notice giving the name and address of the driver and of the owner of the vehicle involved and a statement of the circumstances thereof and shall without unnecessary delay notify the police department of the city wherein the collision occurred or, if the collision occurred in unincorporated territory, the local headquarters of the Department of the California Highway Patrol.
...

(c) Any person failing to comply with all the requirements of this section is guilty of a misdemeanor and, upon conviction thereof, shall be punished by imprisonment in the county jail not exceeding six months, or by a fine not exceeding one thousand dollars ($1,000), or by both that imprisonment and fine.

I'm totally shocked at the repair estimate, just over $3000!!! Didn't look like that much damage. I suppose the good news is that it will ONLY cost me $500.

This is the third time the left side got crushed, the worst being my across-the-street neighbor who backed out of his driveway at full speed after arguing with another neighbor. He HAD to tell me because the neighbor he was arguing with saw him cream the truck. That damage was over $4000.

You should definitely look into who was there before you. Most people pay electronically so it shouldn't be hard to track and if a crime was committed then I would think the police might help.

Good luck.

This really sucks! If you haven't reported to police, do so. Provide them with the information you have here to at least point them in the right direction. Who knows, you just might get lucky.

Take pics of the damage with a tape measure resting on the ground and show where the initial impact is. Call the PD for that area and report a hit and run provide them with info including pics of the damage also being careful to note any color transfer to the impact site. This will provide info to the cops as to what to look for on the other drivers car. The PD should request the info on others in the office at that time. Hopefully they have the info on the other driver. 500 bucks is for youe dedutible I assume. Find a shop that will lower the deductible. It is dog eat dog out there now and there is a good shop that should work with you. I have been in the autobody business for 38 years and these are the hardest times I can ever remember. Good luck. I live up in Petaluma or else I would do it for you and save you some money off your deductible. If you have another car to drive and don't mind coming up this way I will give you back as much of the deductible as possible. Oh yea, you will take some great photos. :smt006
