Perfect day fishing today at Oyster Point. Arrived at the launch at 7:15 am with
my good buddy Vjo.hobie-Dave. Used Shicken's special halibut rig to catch my
first halibut this year. Frozen herring was the bait of choice. Fished until 1:15 pm
and that was it. There were bait fish all over the place. I wish I had brought my
sabiki with me. I would have caught my bait first and used it for bait instead of
the frozen herring. Lesson learned for me for not being ready. At least this time I
know what to expect. BTW, nice meeting you today Ed. I hope you and Dave get
your limits next time.

Now thats a fish! No mutant tail. Awesome jed. I love the shot of it in the water. Bright red gills. Very cool indeed. We will be up by the San Rafael bridge on Sat.

Nice work Jed... :smt007 Man' you must have a lot of days off.  You're putting in a lot of mileage on that Hobie.  Hope to fish with you again soon.

OK shicken what's in this rig I have never fished halibut with dead bait

Search on google "bounce balling halibut" or "ball bouncing halibut" you will find many variations of this rig.  Its similar to the DJB rig.  DJB rig adds 2 hookless hoochies between the dodger and bait.

You can make adjustments to the distance from the dodger to the bait and overall leader length.  Hoochies work well if you dont want to drag a dead bait around.  RSK's or other bait holders are good too.  If you are using a dead bait, snell an octopus hook and put a treble stinger on the end.  Put the octopus hook in teh nose, stick the treble somewhere on teh other end of the bait.

For weight, I found 12oz on a 18 to 24in dropper is good.  Use enough weight where you don't have less than a 45 degree angle to your line.

Heres an example:
