I'ts that time of year again...spring turkey hunting season.  A little off topic from kayak-fishing, but I wanted to see if anyone else was heading out and if they've seen much activity scouting.  Up here in Shasta County things look real good, and the weather forecast couldn't be better...

Shoot straight,

Beenfsihin, Funny you should mention it, I too have been out scouting the territories.   Yesterday I read the recent article "spring hunting techniques" in WON. So last evening after chores I decided to take a walk and try out the info. I walked along the canals near my house practicing a few short calls listening for responses. About 3/4 of a mile down the path I located an area under some live oaks where the birds have been actively feeding. Along my walk I must have gotten too close to one as it left it's roost with a big thud on the ground...never saw that one. I turned around and started home and about 100 yards from my driveway something made me look up in the tree above me and there he was...15' over my head...dam...forgot the camera. I continued walking and the bird remained in his roost.
I am going to walk the other side of the canal tonight to try and distance myself from that bird and see what signs are on that side, bringing the camera this time.

I'm going to miss the opener, but I'll be hunting turkey with my bow this year, so I'll get a couple of extra weeks to get my three gobblers. I can't wait!

Isn't it funny how that's ALWAYS the way it works...forget the camera at home, the fish will be biting, the birds will be flying, etc.  Bring the camera along and all you get are nature shots.  Sounds like you've got something good lines up, good luck!

Dan, the season is longer with a bow?
I'm considering going after them with my bow as well. The pigs at Sonoma are a done deal middle of april and I'll need something to fill the need to shoot!
What're you shooting?
If you don't know where you're headed, any road could get you there.

Stopped by one of the neighbor's properties to talk turkey and he asked how many do we want...his wife counted a total of sixty-two this morning including the young'ns. He gave me all the intel on his acreage across the way including the roosting spots and what the birds do each morning. I hear that once they all assemble on the ground they proceed to fight before splitting up and going off to do what turkeys do....including dig through all their gardens.
Later in the afternoon Patrick and I walked the canals to get to the properties via the long way. About a half mile into the walk we flushed a beauty not twenty feet from us. Continuing down the  path we saw a group out in another buddies field headed towards bed. We caught up to another group in a driveway that were in full strut. Yet another buddy came out to talk and said he would move his truck off the front "lawn" and we can blast away when ever we want. I thanked him for the offer but told him I want to "hunt" the birds from the field next door as they left the roost....a little more sporting. He then told us about one bird he shot in his driveway and then the other birds attacked the downed bird.....nice...sounds like some friends I used to have :smt044.
Of course we all know what will happen the day of the "hunt".....won't be a bird in sight.  Pictures include a shot of me holding my favorite box call up in front of a cork oak tree. Another beautiful nights walk in the neighborhood.      Happy Hunting.....Turkeys

ps the bird in the last shot probably goes over thirty pounds

Great pictures, Allen. A friend who lives in the hills of southern Fremont tells me he often sees large wild pigs rooting up manicured lawns. Sometimes even Elsie the cow shows up at the door.  :smt005

I live against the hills in Fremont, near 84/the canyon...  the hills there are lousy with turkeys.

I won't make the opener, but do hope to be out with my bow a couple times during the season.

I think a bow is in my future. If I get one soon maybe I will have some confidence at it by next year. Cool arrows Chuck.
