:smt013  Just back from being turned away again...  without anyone even looking at my kayak...  despite the fact that I have valid insp. paperwork from Del Valle last weekend, (and Quarry from the weekend before THAT...)

Because it's raining.

Now...  I wouldn't be so pissed about that if it weren't for the fact that, anticipating this situation I'd had the foresight to call and speak directly with supervisers for the East Bay Regional Park Dist, both individuals in charge of Del Valle, and QL, who assured me no yakkers would get flat-out turned away JUST because of rain.  See...  I didn't want to bother loading up if that were the case.  I was assured that reason would prevail and so far it has!  I've since passed inspections in the rain at both locations no problem.

But today I was told, after a phone call was made, that I was to be turned away.  No inspection...???

Elias Hernandez, Jr. is the Parks Superviser in charge of Operations at QL Regional Recreation Area, but he is off today, because of course noone likes to recreate on a weekend!  How silly of me to expect him to answer his office phone, cell phone, or return a page on a weekend!!!

One more thing!  Let's say mussels are found in QL?  Or DV, or Anderson, or ??  Then we are banned?  What would be the point of that?  I asked several EB Parks people about this and noone has an answer.

Think I'll get a rebate on my yearlong East Bay Parks parking permit?

I have stopped trying to reason with the inspection process. They don't do anything by cause delays  and pain to the boaters in my opinion. It is so much that I have returned my yearly inspection pass for a refund.

Familiar with San Justo reservoir near Hollister? Zebra mussels found and it was shut down, permanently, not even open for shore fishing.

You know Calbear

I don't think anyone in his right mind would want to introduce those mussels to our reservoirs and it is a matter of education more than inspection. Those inspections don't do anything for our lakes. IMHO, those mussels are going to get in our lakes under the inspector's noses. It is a waist of our money and resources.

Eric, I had been meaning to ask you yesterday about QL. It just doesn't make sense also that, after you pass inspection, you get inspection-free passes (on rainy days) for 30 days. Who knows where some kayaks/boats have been for the next 29 days. Definitely waste of money.

Howard,

The 30-day thing is just you don't have to PAY for inspection again for 30-days.  But you are still subject to inspection every time.

When I had called I was told on rainy days they would look at your history, and take that into consideration, (ie, if you were just inspected the weekend before, they would more or less assume you were ok, but I guess not).

Just curious as to how they are keeping ducks and other birds that land / walk in the water from hopping from one lake to another and spreading these mussels ?  :smt009

That sucks big time Eric. When I had the inspection done at the Lafayette Reser-
voir, the people there was super cool and even gave me some pointers to how to
pass the inspection everytime. I guess we all wished that all of them were so
helpful like that everywhere.

My experiences have been much the same, except for today.  I know what it takes to pass.

But they refused to even look at my kayak specifically because it was raining.  I wonder if the woman responsible for inspections that day just didn't want to get wet.

The lady at the booth is always nice and reasonable, but she said it wasn't up to her to make the call today...  she didn't even bother to tell me in person, it all went down with a phone call.
