So what's the plan?

I will unchained from the desk for a day or two starting Monday the 9th.

Rhyak; you still going out then? I would really like to be as far north as possible (gaviota) since it will be a last minute 1-night thing (and I'm coming from SF).

We're in a holding pattern right now. Ryan has told me he can't make the opening week. Doesn't look like PJ or I can make it on the 1st either. Not much of a loss though, weather looks like it's coming up from the south on Sunday. Well keep an eye on conditions for weekend #2.

Wierd I dont know why... I will be launching at Refugio on the 9th if anyone wants to join in for some fun. Weather permitting that is... Plus I dont want to drive all the way to the BU just for some fockfish and bass when I can get them 90 miles from my home.

RHYAK,

I was just looking at Google Earth and noticed a MPA marked across Refugio. Is this a proposed or existing MPA?

I may not be able to resist this one.  What are the exact days?

I would be driving down from SF, poss with my brother.

BTW what could we shoot a spear at down there?  Would love to nail a WSB free-diving.

there is a really nice reef off of  El Cap I think it's called Olive Reef.  Lok for the freestanding kelp.

I've caught calicos and barracuda there from a PB....but i think it was summertime.

I believe the halibut bite goes off earlier down there as well.  Good luck maybe I can go too?

Allen

OK there is a MPA in front of refugio but one we can ge out of it with out a problem... its about 1.3 miles from the launch.... What is the difference between a SMCA state marine conservation area and a SMR state marine reserve.?

Ummmmm the MLPA process has not designated any new MPA's south of Pt Conception (yet!). There is a pre-existing reserve there at Refugio but it allows recreational take of finfish aka "fish."

Here's the info copy+pasted from the DFG site:
Refugio State Marine Conservation Area
SPECIES PROHIBITED: All marine aquatic plants; All invertebrates EXCEPT chiones, clams, cockles, rock scallops, native oysters, crabs, lobsters, ghost shrimp, sea urchins, mussels, and worms.
SPECIES ALLOWED: Chiones, clams, cockles, rock scallops, native oysters, crabs, lobsters, ghost shrimp, sea urchins, mussels, and worms; Finfish.

Here's the link to every CA marine reserve: http://www.dfg.ca.gov/mlpa/mpa_regs.asp

Awesome link. Seems I'm always sifting through multiple pages to figure out the full MPA picture.

While we are roadtrip-for-rockies mode, the Oregon regs look pretty interesting.  Open all year.  Only 6 RCG fish may be kept.  2 lings.  But hey, "open all year" is good.  You may need to be Oregon resident; I don't know.  Maybe someone knows the regs.

Holy shniekey, did you know its only 5 abs a YEAR in Oregon, and 8" minimum?  One per day?  wow.  Welcome to NorCal ab diving in 2020.  At least, it appears to be open all year.

Also, I guess the whole "t-shirt kayaking" thing goes out the window in drizzly Oregon.

See you in SB.  Maybe someone wants to power north with me one of these days, but it is a stretch.

I'm down, I keep tabs on the Oregon wx all the time for this very reason; looks a lot bumpier up there.
