With the crappy weather I need a fishing fix. Anyone recommend a good 'fishing book' I have read The Empty Ocean by Richard Ellis and Working on the Edge by Spike Walker. I like both so something along those lines.

Thx

I enjoyed "Blue Water Gold Rush", about commercial urchin divers in California during the 80's.
Another good one is "Last of the Blue water hunters" about free diving (its a classic).

On a non-fishing note, I enjoyed "Dog Man" a story about a japanese engineer who devoted his life to bringing the Akita hunting dog back from near extinction in its native rural Japan (the dogs were often used as food & their fur to line officer's coats). I hadn't read much of post WWII rural Japan, and since I love working dog breeds I found it very interesting.

I'm currently reading the unabriged "Robinson Crusoe". It s kind of dated now, and I have surprisingly little sympathy for the author, but it's still a great read so far. Plus, I've learned how to make a goatskin suit!

Hey, I heard Holy Toledo has a great book he's been trying to get his dad, otobepelgic, to buy!  :smt005

I highly recommend Fly-Fishing the 41st: Around the World on the 41st Parallel by James Prosek. Even if you're not into fly fishing, it's a good read and he's an accomplished writer.

Also, by the same author is Joe and Me: An Education in Fishing and Friendship. I haven't read it but it has great reviews.

That sounds interesting. Weren't there literally only about half a dozen Akitas left after WWII? Sorry for the threadjack, Eric.

Voices of the Old Sea by Norman Lewis about living in an old fishing village right after WWII
He and one of his buddies did a lot of free-diving   This is circa 1950

but good luck finding it
I got it at kepler's in menlo park but most of his other books I ordered through powell's were shipped from England

So the book says. That was what drove the guy to devote his life to keeping the breed alive. Like I said, if you are into dogs or are interested in post ww2 japanese history, it's a good read.

The books written by Linda something (she was the female swordboat captain in "the perfect storm") are good fishing related books too. I can't recall the titles, but one was about lobster fishing & the other just about being a woman swordboat captain.

Norman Maclean - A River Runs Through It.  Short autobiographical read.

"Poets talk about 'spots of time,' but it is really fishermen who experience eternity compressed into a moment. No one can tell what a spot of time is until suddenly the whole world is a fish and the fish is gone. I shall remember that son of a bitch forever."

Moby Dick. The mother of all adventure fishing books IMHO.

+1 on that. Hemingway is a master and that book is one of my favorites. If you like books that keep your interest, have great dialogue and amusing characters read anything by Elmore Leonard.

The fishing was so good I thought I was there yesterday!

"On the Run", by David Dibenedetto is a kick in the head.  The book is about his road trip down the east coast following the stripers.

"Call me Ishmael." Ah yes, an obsessive search for "the one that got away." I may have to read that one again.

I haven't read any since I was a kid, but Jack London wrote about fishing themes, some based here in the Bay Area, as was he.

Anything from Ed Zern, he was writer/editor for Field and Stream I think, his stories are always funny.

+2 for Hemingway (you coulda guessed that by looking at my avatar).

Longitude by Dava Sobel and Guns Germs and Steele by Jared Diamond are two of my recent favorites.
