I agree with FisHunter...crossing paths with a GWS doesn't worry me that much, but seeing one of these guys pop up next to my yak and eyeball me would most certainly leave me with a squishy lump in my wetsuit.  :smt087

I've read that the reason we see whales so close to shore in Monterey Bay is that they try to get in shallow to avoid crossing the trench where they and their calves are in greater danger of being attacked by killer whales.  And that the k.whales hunt in packs and have very clever tactics.

  That show I saw talked about that very scenario, the whales staying in close, their sound gets lost in the kelp forests and wave action, so the KW's can't hear them.  Only when they enter the open waters, will the KW's be able to hear them, then go get them.
