Thats great ewb, you are like my long lost twin!  I simply love making things, it adds so much more to the hobby.  I got some wood out and hope to make some up tomorrow.  I have some cotton rope to do some wrapped handles on a few.  I was thinking of putting the wood burner to some as well then finishing with sparvarnish.

I am gonna hit up woodcraft on Monday they have some real nice 2x2x12 inch exotic hardwood blanks there for $5. Super dense wood they make perfect knockers. I usually just finish them with wipe on poly or bees wax. I breakout the wood burner for the crappy wood.

Here are a few GMS III knockers I turned out of some scrap wood.  I kept them pretty basic, but did a little rope work to dress them up.  I stained the wood with an alcohol based dye I made from alcohol/rit dye.  I them sealed the wood with some poly sparvarnish.  I did the rope work and finished up the rest of the poly coats to seal the wood more and lock the rope work in place.  They turned out decent for a blunt instrument.

I played around with my wood burner but it looked bad.  So I just put the names on the billies with a marker prior to the first poly coat.  I will play around with using a stencil next time, or embedding a sticker/label to make it a little nicer.

The rope handle is a simple french whipping, with Turks head tied on two of them above the handle.  I used some nylon rope I had.  It should give a good grip with wet hands or gloves.

I will make up a few more for prizes, and a few to give away.  They are labor intensive with the rope handles, but that is what makes them cool  :smt001

So far I made four; one for myself, Abking, Banjotad and one for a prize.

I have some olive wood which may make some really nice ones.  I will try it out, as it may be a little green yet.

What do you think of these for a few prizes Abking?  I can dress them up a little more if you think they need it.  Maybe some more details cut in the wood, or some fancier Turks heads.  I just did a 3 bight Turk on mine, and a 2 bight Turk on the prize.

Martin - that's short notice for a marriage, Bro...  Do what your heart tells you is right (mine tells me we need you at the Cove!   :smt008)

Matt - Thanks, Man!!  Your work is awesome.  They are definitely fancy enough to be prizes, give-aways, or even sale items!  You're a production Guy, Matt - WTG.   :smt001

Thanks everyone, I love playing around in the shop.  My wife runs a daycare and it is my escape  :smt001

I have a few more drying now.  I got a good rope burn on my finger from tying these up.  I have to remember to use my fid and pliers more.  I will try to get some more exotic woods to try like ewb mentioned.  These should float as they are fairly light, but nice and strong (I picked good straight grain wood out of the pile).  Let me know if you guys want me to lead fill the tips.  I use that on my power boat knocker, but it may be overkill on the kayak.

I would make some gaffs as well, but don't have any gaff hooks.  Anyone know a cheap/reasonable priced supplier?  Stainless stock is not cheap around here.

ewb, are you making some up for gifts/prizes as well? I look forward to seeing what you come up with.  I will try to make several more, but I am studying for a big math and physics promotional exam at work, so need to dedicate a little more time to that.  Hard to break away from the fun things though!

Abking, are you going to make some Panko Lingcod for us?  I love that video.  Where do you find your Panko?  I does look good, especially deep fried!  Do you use it on your Ab's as well?  Mmmmmmm.

Matt

I got the hook at Fishermans W-House. They were like $5 each. Just did a quick google search and found this. Yes, I am gonna turn a few more out.

I'll have gear with me to do some frying, but I'm planning on just bringing pre-made stuff for the potluck as I'll be really busy meeting, greeting, eating, drinking, and keeping my fam occupied and happy.  I think that Friday will see some of the freshest deep-fried fish/ab anywhere though  :smt003 :smt007.  I use Panko that I get at the grocery store and I mix it with Italian seasoned bread crumbs because the Panko is kinda bland.  Oh, Man, my mouth's watering now...   :smt005
