Since I'm moving to the city (Folsom) and leaving my kayak trailer in Lodi, I need to have a civilized storage rack. While I will garage space, I now sadly need worry about function and asthetics. I was thinking about welding up something similiar to the following:

Looking for other storage ideas.

I have made 2 using 1 inch square stock. It hods 4 kayaks. 2 on each side. There is apiece of plywood for the floor that is storage for big plastic containers. I would take a pic but its outside right now anfd full of kayaks. I also put casters on the four corners to roll in and out of the garage. I like the design in the ad you posted. You should be able to make one fairly inexpensive. Without the fancy arm that cams out. I will try to post a pic tommorrow.

Can you hang them from the rafters in your garage? If so, I have a $10 set up that I can share. Super simple and real easy to use.

Let me know and I will take some pics

Brian,
I think that even if you need to roll the kayak rack around the storage area (garage?) on wheels, the best storage method is the yak upside down on flat sections of the boat top rather than the side, chines or bottom in one of the side/angled "cradle" mounts like in the picture.

I know the side/angled deal takes less horizontal room, but particularly in a "warm" place like Folsom, I would rather not take a chance of hull deformation.

If you can attach to a wall, a simple upright mounting bar (pair) with straight tubes off it are cheap and easy. Use steel for the most economical project.

A similar set-up can adapted for rolling around with bottom tube steel horizontals and some casters.

Wow, that's great organization, looks "sano" (yeah, I'm old) . . . but - those hulls-bottom side down and the through the scupper hole carts give me the willies . . .

Ya, have too agree, you would think with all that thought out stuff, maybe he has some some cushy things going on.

But, I would still be flipping them over for the long haul...

Even though, I leave my Outbacks on the Yakama saddles with no "illin" effects...

Makes it real easy to off load and load like torpedo bays, just slides right on/off.....

I have always stored my yaks top side down. and that is how I plan to continue storing them. I need to make a free standing unit as I can't bolt to the garage walls.

I'd love to see a pic of Ravensblack's rack.  It sounds like what I need.

I'm pretty Shameless in posting pics of that baby,  but I just want to put that design out there for anyone who is looking for ideas on building a trailer. It has also solved my storage issues too...

As far as " Organized Garage " a closer look at the " Whole Picture " would reveal another side...

" What do you mean put all the old kids stuff in the garage!!!!  Oh Man!!!!!  :smt061  "

I'm constantly trying to claim my space out there....

Hi Brian,
The Suspenz Kayak Storage Racks are great for storing fishing kayaks. While you could attempt to construct something yourself, keep in mind the Suspenz racks are made of commercial grade powder-coated steel, with UV- resistant straps, & vinyl coated pivot arms to address the issues associated with safe and secure kayak storage, to keep your kayak is top condition and ready for your next adventure.

The best way to store a kayak is on its side and not touching hard surfaces to prevent hull distortion and damage.  If you have more than one boat, you will want to adjust your storage racks to fit the fishing kayaks’ dimensions.  The Suspenz rack is the only rack that is adjustable and modular to fit many different size boats.  More storage tips are offered for free on our website: www.suspenz.com, click on tab Kayak Storage Tips.

Many fishing kayak owners have storage space constraints.  The Suspenz free standing racks are compact and can store any size fishing kayak, or canoe using only 24” of floor space.  And because each boat is stored in its own cradle and locked into place with safety straps and locking pins, you will never need to worry about the boat falling off the rack.

Options for storage include a wall mount unit and storage racks for 2 or 3 boats.  We will also have a caster system available in March for rolling the racks.

And finally, because we are committed to our Northern California Kayakers & especially to NorCal Kayak Anglers, we are offering a 15% discount on the Wall Mount Rack, 2-Boat Free Standing Rack & 3rd Boat Expansion Rack for the month of February. Use code NCKA and order on-line at www.suspenz.com.  Please contact us at [email protected] if you have any questions or comments.
