Thank you all for the encouragement. I really appreciate it. Since I'll be having Thursday and
Fridays off, I'll be keeping an eye on some weekdays hook ups. Less traffic on the water.

Thanks again NCKA brothers

We're doing the same thing at my work.  Be very careful about what days you pick for your unpaid time off, especially if there are holidays among them.  There's some kind of quirk in the rules that you qualify as 'unemployed' for a given week if you don't work any of the days and don't get paid for them.  For a paid vacation day, like the fourth of july, it doesn't count (and disqualifies the whole week) if you receive a paycheck that week.  If you're paid bi-weekly it does count if you do not receive a paycheck that week (you didn't work and you didn't get paid).  Look into the particulars but be careful you don't lose a week of unemployment by taking a week with a paid holiday.  I guess either xmas or new years was such a week and a bunch of our lab techs used it to their advantage.

The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee
Superior, they said, never gives up her dead
When the gales of November come early.

I feel for you jedmo. We just laid off 20% of the employees at my work. This is the 3rd layoff that I've avoided since starting my job here 5.5 years ago. We let one person go that had been working here for 15 years and another that got laid off a month before his 30 year mark :smt011

I feel very fortunate just to have a job right now. The thought of not having a job is very scary for me as my wife and I need two full time incomes to pay the bills. I've got a 9 month old little girl depending on me to keep the money flowing. I hope the economy turns around sooner than later. I'm fortunate in that we have 50+ computers and a hand full of servers here and it's just me and my boss keeping the wheels turning. I don't think they could get it done with only one of us.

To everybody who has lost a job or is about to loose a job, keep your head up. Things will get better.

Man, it is getting really scary now. Our little company had just let 10 more people go yesterday.
Now we are down to 65 employees left. This sucks BIG TIME!  :smt013

Lost my teaching job a year and a half ago to declining enrollment. I've been substitute teaching since then while looking for another full time teaching position but they just aren't out there up here in Redding. And it gets worse, most of the schools up here are going to have to lay off more teachers and other staff because of the state budget crisis/fiasco :smt010 Thank goodness the wife still has her job with Shasta County, between her job and my on again off again subbing we are getting the bills paid but we don't enjoy the same lifestyle($$$) we used to. :smt013

Banjotad, that sucks - Redding has to be a tough spot. I used to teach ESL (in private institutes) but gave it up years ago - couldn't afford to do in in the city. Teaching in public schools in an honorable profession, IMO, but often under-appreciated, particularly monetarily.

Pretty much. I strongly encourage everyone to prepare a "Plan B" now if you haven't already. At least start updating your resume/cv or begin writing one - it ain't fun for most people.

Jedmo, that is getting scary. This may sound lame but at least they're taking action to try to save the company - believe it or not, some smaller (and large) businesses do nothing 'til it's too late. On the other hand, some execs will cut everyone else to save their own hides & make no sacrifices themselves whatsoever (big news, right?). The co. I worked for is flailing now, so in a way it's probably better that I got cut sooner since now I've had time to develop prospects & such before the economy declined even further.

Best of luck to all & keep your heads up. Panicking won't help! Prepare for the possibilities, though.
Off to a job fair now.
Catch & Repeat

Hi Jed:

When I was outsourced and lost my house in Albion, I found that the most important thing is your Health and Family.
Most of what we have will rust and fade away but, memories will last a lifetime!  :smt002

Keep your head up! Be fortunate you still have a job, so many people being laid off and companies closing. I got laid off in January. I filed for unemployent and after over a month and I havent recieved anything now they say I never sent in my form you fill out every week and now I am no longer eligible for it.  :smt011 Not my fault.
Sorry to hi-jack your thread.  :smt003

Intel is closing their D2 fab (one of 5)in Santa Clara.  My company has 11 (11 of the 700 tools in the fab) tools that are in the process of being shut down. Gas lines being cut, power lines removed etc... Very sad.  The fa closure took place though before the economy took it's dump.  Fortunately my company has 2 (possibly 3) other customer sites that are going to be getting new tools installed.  I'm fortunate in that I'll be busy with these installs and servicing for the next few months anyhow.
