I plan to launch off Liberty Island near Cache Slough around 8 am. High tide is not until around 10:30 am, so I don't think its worth getting there first light. Bite seems to be best around high tide.

Tides for Rio Vista starting with December 19, 2008.

Directions:
Its an easy drive out to Liberty Island. Take Old Davis Road so. 4mi. (UCD exit off 80.)turn left onto Tremont, 2 miles turn right onto Bulkney, continue 15 mi. until King, left on KIng, then turns into Liberty Island Road. Park near bridge.

FYI: these directions are to Liberty Island, the bridge had a sign that read :Shag Slough, so its not acutally Cache Slough.

Good find, I've looked at that area on the delta map a few times, but always wondered about the access.  I'm looking forward to your report.

Great find,  Thanks for the report. I wonder if the stripers will stay the winter up in there?

Dale,

That's actually something I have been wondering, are stripers year round in the Delta or do the migrate south? I haven't talked to anyone yet who fishes for stripers year round in the Delta. Any info would be great.

I have only been fishing for stripers in the delta for two years, so I'm no expert.  But from what I understand, the stripers migrate into the delta in the fall (the fall run) and eventually make their way into back sloughs to spawn.  In the spring (the spring run) they make their way back out to the ocean.  At the beginning of the fall run I had success targeting the main arteries off the rivers that the fish used as a highway.  Later on the back areas were more productive.

There is a population of smaller fish, or diaper stripers, that will be in the delta system year round until large enough to make the run to the ocean.  Most keepers and trophys are caught during the two runs, with the fall producing bigger fish and the spring producing better numbers.  When the water gets cold enough (about right now), the plugging bite kind of dies off and the bait anglers have better luck.  I've noticed a slow decline in the plugging action lately, and think that it is almost over.  Hopefully I'm wrong and the action will continue, there is nothing quite like blasting a striper on topwater!

That's good info. I am going to try and stay on them this winter, getting out every other week in Jan - Feb hopefully. I'll start trying the bait approach if plugs start failing. I have an arsenal of stuff to try that I have used back east, so should be able to determine when that happens!

What time are you "afternooners" planning on arriving? I'm gonna head out there as well but have to follow up on some work leads in the am.

Action was pretty slow today, no bass for me   :smt011
Talked with some duck hunters who said they got two stripers.
Sturgeon were all over the surface and people on the bank were getting them, though few looked they were in the keeper range. Rob
