As promised I'm posting up to see what tackle I should roll out to Cali with at the end of the month and see if there is anyone that is still interested showing an east coast yakfisher how it's done out west.  This is what I'm going to attempt to bring, please modify or make suggestions where you feel they need it.

1. Shimano Trevela Jigging Rod w/ Avet MXL
2. Shimano Teramar (Med Heavy) w/ Avet SX
3. Shimano Teramar (Med) w/ Abu Garcia 6501
4. Fly rod (Maybe, not sure if it's worth bringing or not???)

5. Assorted butterfly jigs (recommendations on sizes, colors, etc.???)
6. Assorted gami circle hooks (5/0-8/0???)
7. Wire leader?
8. Assorted mono/flouro tippet and shock leader material and stuff for rigging such as snap swivels, barrels, beads, blah blah blah

9. PFD, Hat, Polarized Glasses, VHF, etc. etc.
10. Some enthusiasm to get some PULLAGE West Coast Style!!!!

I'll prob wait and get lead and bait there.  I'm sure the people on the plane will appreciate that as well.

Eager to hear you guys input

Thanks,

-Ryan

If I remember correctly, you'll be staying in Santa Cruz? You're main target will be rockfish. And/or halibut.

-Those combos are fine. Most people bring only 2 rods OTW with them so you might not need 3. (But I often bring 3 rods w/me: 1 for lures, 1 for bait, and 1 lightweight for fun.)
-Leave the flyrod at home.
-Circle hooks are fine but you can get by with regular octopus hooks, size 3/0 to 6/0.
-Butterfly-type jigs will work great. Same goes for most other flashy spoons (Megabait brand is popular out here, for example).
-Wire leader not necessary (unless you plan to fish inside SF bay for sharks).
-20-30lb mono or 20-50lb braid is standard for rockfish.
-a PFD and VHF radio would be key. Maybe also a paddling jacket and water shoes/booties. Also want to consider that most people will wear farmer-john style wetsuit. Some will wear waders if the ocean conditions are tame enough. You can probably rent a wetsuit from one of the local shops if you don't already have one.
Good luck!

Thanks for the info,

I'm going to be staying in Monterey from Oct 29th-Nov. 3rd.  Jigging for rockfish and Halibut sounds awesome! Looking foreward to getting out there!

Also....as far as clothing goes I'm planning on just doing a pair of waders with a waterproof top and then PFD over that.  It's what we use over here as go to cold weather gear and surprisingly it seals up pretty well even if you dump. Dry suit soon to come but gotta get some extra scratch first.

I'll be in touch!

Haha.  I'm originally from Northern VA (Springfield).  After I graduated I got a job with Northrop Grumman in Newport  News, and now I'm still in NN but work for a small HVAC Engineering firm.  My parents have property in Garret County and Smithsburg-Lietersburg (sp?) So despite my screen name I'm not a "grandpa"...It's just a nickname.  But I'm lookin' forward to getting out there and jiggin' up some west coast Rocks!

If you are lookn ta hunt up some Sturgeon, Halibut, and or Striped Bass I can offer some gear and  tackle info.  If you are lookn for rock fish I'm quite sure FisHunter will be happy to let you know all you will want, and need to hunt Lings and rock fish.
Come tah think about it, Folks like FisHunter, FrankSacramento, AOTY, Sharky, and Danglen, off the top of my head, can get you the right info for ALL our available Nor Cal game fish. Where are you planen tah do some fishn, and how long you plan tah fish. When I do the fishing road trip, it invariably boils down to quality vs quantity as it relates to budget and time constraints.
Always like to read about the itinerary of a fishing trip, especially those long ones.

Tight lines.

Yep the Rapp is in VA.  As well as some kick ass salt fishing too.  I try to do it all,  but there are soo many fish to catch and soo little time.

I'm probably going to only have one day to fish so I'm going to keep an eye on the weather and choose my day accordingly.  I'll most likley be fishing around the Monterey area and I need to go back and look at my previous post because a couple of guys graciously offered to go fishing with me and possibly even let me borrow a yak for the day!  If you guys are still out there and are still down let me know!!!

Sturgeon??? Now that would be sick!  But basically I would just like to get some pullage!  How many lbs of drag you typically use on those Dinosaurs???
