I got there late cause it's so great to sleep in AND fish! Plus I can park in the main lot.

Met a bunch of guys fishing in the same zone as scwafish cabby from yesterday.

I fished deeper and found a school of blacks. I ended up with 5 on my stringer, but they were not big. they liked a black saltwater fly with a 2" glow hoochie over it. no squid needed.

Then I found feathers and scales on the water and massive schools of bait. messing around with that did not get me much but it was very interesting.  Clearly the scene of a sardine massacre! I put a yellow and black on my stringer cause I had a china last week and I thought I'd compare. Probably not as good, but we'll see.

Btw, that was a LOT of bait. I have never seen schools like that before on my sonar. I figure the only fish that would bite after I saw the size of the bait balls out there were small blacks that are not big enough to eat sardines, and ling cod that are always hungry (and not very smart).

After a lot of hits and no hookups near the bait schools, I pull up a couple kingfish. yikes! better move!

I was trolling along like I often do while moving from spot to spot and I saw some good structure, so I stopped and started bouncing my swimbait to the yak. BAM! A very thick and chunky ling hits my swimbait and I have a fantastic battle. Up and down 4 times and with some zip, so I figured it was a monster, but it was just a very buff and angry ling that was only 3 or 4 inches into legal. It fought like an underling, but it had the power of an overling. Best fight all year. I have had a ling on all of my last 5 go-outs. malpaso, LK, DP, BH, BH. nothing above 30" tho.

I had paddled out without my hat so I decided to head in as the sun was starting to show and I had a ling in my tankwell.

Fun meeting a few new people out there and listening to the radio with reports of lings and cabbies.

sounds like you had a great go-out john.

the biggest ling i ever caught was from throwing a 5" all-silver crocodile spoon into big bait balls on a massive slick of diving birds. you never know what's pushing those things around.

Since I saw fishunter out there, I think some pics will be coming along. AK, I think next year will be my year for taking pictures. I feel like this year I am not panicing over my equipment all the time, I am almost calm enough to try and take some pics and possibly some vid.

The sardine massacre site was very interesting. the water was dark, almost red, over the bait balls. almost oily. bird feathers everywhere. it was something you could not take pictures of anyways, but that kind of massive wildlife concentration is encouraging for the whole environment thing.

Not sure how it would affect the whole shark equation. Seems like all that bait would throw off the targetting mechanisms.

On the drive home, by tunitas creek, I saw a huge offcolor patch of water. Wondered what that was, some kind of concentration of something tho. possibly a bait ball, but there were no birds on it. could be jelly fish I guess.

Seems like a lot of the bait that was in santa cruz is moving north now. maybe there will be a last hurrah for pacifica this season if that bait gets penned in there?

Great report, J. Nice ling streak too---not easy in mid-late summer. I haven't caught a legal for a month.

John nice to finally meet you as well.

The day started out for Uminchu and I at 5AM.  We gassed up the NCKA mobile and hit 80 for our first trip to the bean.  Pulled in and took our time loading up.  On the water by 8.  Fished till 4pm.  Fishing was hot, then slow then hot again.  We were there specifically for the cab hunt.  Didn't catch a lot of fish but did manage some quality fish.  Adam was kind enough to share the secret cab spots with us.  Picked up a bunch of black and yellows early managed one 15 inch cab before the bite died around 10AM.  In the afternoon the fishing to the north pickup up and Naoaki picked up a nice 20 inch cab.  Adam encouraged me to stay and look for an upgrade.  Around 3 I hook up and land a 17 inch cab.  Nothing to brag about but points anyway.  Here are some pix Naoaki took.

My finder was dead, so I was following everybody so thank you for the help.
It was good to see bunch of NCKAer again & taking pics of their catches especially Fishin-Jays (I've been bad karma for him)...

What a fun morning. Nice to hang & fish with all you guys out there.
I set out with a goal of hunting down a ling larger than 31" (my largest to date). A couple weeks ago I fought & lost a fish that felt like one of the Bean's famous lingosaurs when it rocked me & broke off.
So that's what I was after.
And eventually, that's what I found.
Beautiful conditions up there, reminded me of the "incident" day last July.
I fished a 7" swimbait for a nice 18" black RF and a couple cabs in the 15-18" range, an 18" grass rf, plus a dark purple male greenling and a black & yellow rf, and a 28" ling (all released cept for the black rf). Then I drift over some nice shelves & make a drop. Immediately I'm snagged, so I pull up then drop the rod tip to whip it loose and the slack line vanishes in an instant and the rod loads up, up, and up. The fish starts taking line and I think, 'not this time you don't' and apply a little more pressure. A little Bean sleigh ride begins as the fish turns the boat. I gain about 40ft of line, fish takes it back. Another 40 feet up and Jay asks 'have you seen it yet?' as it freight trains down again! After the 3rd run I finally get it up to the surface & it's the right kind. After a few tense moments with the net, it's secure.
I had to jet out early to feed some farm animals so I didn't even get the cool OTW photo, but at least Jay & Paul got visual confirmation that I didn't make it up. At home the fish was the better part of 35". Anyone have a gues as to the weight? I was thinking 16lbs or so. Once I get home I'll post the one pic I got before the camera battery died on me.
Wish I could've hung around longer, as the group out there was a lot of fun.
'Til next time guys!
Sean

Thanks for the good company, and thank you to Fishunter for showing us the Cabbie spot. i ended the day with a 20" cab that came home for some nice fish tacos!

This was my first time at the Bean and I couldn't have asked for better conditions. It was an easy launch and landing and the water was like glass for most of the morning. Of course, I'm still trying to figure out how best to deal with my seasickness issues and even with light swell I blew chunks a couple times.  :smt078 Oddly, being sick never really bothers me much and I always keep fishing happily, but it would be nice not to have the issue at all. I think I'll be taking Adam's advice and going for the Scopace pills soon.

Looking forward to next time!  :smt006

Nice to hear you guys were keeping the water warm for me while I was regrouping and getting rigged.

Sean, congrats!  On the weight, I believe the 19.7lber I got last year was 37" or so.

Man, I skip out a weekend and I miss fishing with luminaries such as Scwafish, Cafecraig, Jmairey, and  Dan the Man as well as the regular rock solid BH crew...  bummer!

But I'm ready now so lookout!
