NCKA on the Lower Klamath - 8/31/08 - VIDEO ADDED - ROAD TRIPPERS CHECKED IN

Met up with the guys today just before sunrise.  We were all in a giddy mood, anticipating some good chances at a salmon or steelhead.  We geared up and got on the water around 6:30.  The mist and fog were very cool and added much to the mystique of checking out such a wild area for what was the first time for all of us.  Within an hour or so we found some other boats fishing around us, so we knew we were doing something right.  Soon we'd start seeing big salmon rolling, and we heard of one caught - a 13 pounder.  We fished our asses off for 7 hours or so and never saw a fish caught other than the sea lion eating one and the native fisherman pulling up big slugs of salmon out of his gill net.  We went in for lunch and no one was disappointed - the place is wild and beautiful, and we were loving being there.  After a leisurely lunch at camp we headed up river to Klamath Glen and tried our luck in more river-like conditions, as the morning adventure had been down in the tide water just below the 101 bridge.  We gave it 3 more hours or more upstream, again saw many big fish roll, again didn't see anyone land one, and again had a blast!  Allen had one strike - the only touch any of us got all day.  The place is cool - we're going back.

No AOTY break-through today, but the potential was there.  The guys are giving it a shot again tomorrow.

That sounds like an all around excellent labor day weekend fellas. Abking is a great ambassador for the Northcoast. Is it not the most beautiful stretch of coastline and river valleys anywhere. I'm sure a fatty salmon would be the coup de grace. My buddies have been nailing the 1/2 pounders there at Klamath Glen and gotten into some nice steelhead as well. We are gonna take my driftboat down for a three day float from Johnsons to the Mouth this week. I'm lookin forward to some time out under the stars, I'll let you know how we do.

Eric, thanks for the adventure updates! I want to be up there right now! I'm going up tomorrow though.
Were you guys pulling spinners? How were the crowds? I heard of a derby this weekend with lots of boats. It looks like the guys camped under the tall casino sign right before the bridge?

Went out of Trinidad today for one last hoorah--wind and swell city, oh and skunk city too.  Even with all that wind there were a billion flies.

Little Cleos were the popular hardware, by far.  We went with them and the guys also tried some bait bouncing.  Crowds weren't bad - the derby was over once we'd arrived.  The guys camped at Cat's which is just northwest of the 101 bridge, and we launched from there, paddled up river to the bridge and back.

I'm having withdrawls now - that was Good Times.

this was the farthest I had ever been(driven) away from home since going to ShelterCove thursday!....maybe I should get out more often?....anyway, it was a very EyeOpenning trip.....never knew RedTrash even exsisted!   I wonder if they blame "theMan" or their parents.......either way, they don't like non-red skinned people fishing thier waters.....can't really blame them though, i just flow with the current.

....seeing a river was a big spirit riser!..getting the cold shoulder from the Indians was a real eye opener to the fact that...WE(non-Am.Ind) are the MINORITY and that's the way it is NOW...and WAS for them...oh the tides have changed(up there anyway).....we were told to comeback in a few hours(it's after 5pm already), the person who does the camping is not here, then walks up a local and guess what?
We took it we were not wanted in their camping area....which was cool, because they had signs along the road, stating the different tribes that would not be allowed either......IthinkIT'ScalledPREDUDICY,andTHEYarePAYINGitBACK
