Just a few years ago you could get the SX for $149 (less on sale)...  I know a lot of people here use this reel.  Does it still have the drag that goes from too light to too tight in adjustment?

Kevin, the SX worked fine for me while fishing for yellowtail and dorado. I also have the MXL, LX, and Pro 30. Thinking about getting a Hoo-X.

Hopefully for larger tuna. I use the SX as a light tackle challenge. Nothing wrong with that, is it? It's much easier to flyline a sardine with a SX or MX than with a 4/0 or larger size reel. Some people were even using Trevalas successfully.

Nope nothing wrong with that. just curious. so on a long range if you do end up undergunned, does everybody yell at you or are you allowed to make that mistake for yourself?

No. No yelling, John, especially from those using beefier tackle who lose the same size fish due to poorly maintained reels, frayed line, or questionable moves (or non-moves) at the rail.

if you have a fish on for a long time, doesn't that increase the chances you saw somebody else off?

I'm thinking of trying the longrange idea, but I'd like to skip the super huge reels. hoping that 65lb spectra on a mid-size reel will be okay. I know it's okay for me, I just don't want to be in any arguments with anybody over it.

I managed a 58# rooster on my SX and trevala combo--not on a long range boat of course, but in a yak (yes i was mothershipped- gasp)

The rule on the boat is to follow your line and keep moving so that the line is always straight out from the boat in front of you. If I cut someone off, it's because that person is not keeping his line in front of him. There are some people who become "anchors": once they find a spot on the rail, they won't move to follow their line. Eventually the deckhand will cut those lines so they don't saw anyone off.

Nobody (in my group anyway and on the Royal Polaris) is going to gripe about light tackle being used.

yeah, but you also got dragged 2 miles,  :smt002. that doesn't work on a big boat.

Hi,

To clarify, I did not mean the drag is notchy just the lever.  It seems like it goes from light drag to pretty stiff right away.  Not sure if it was just the one I looked at or all devices.

J get the August issue of Western Outdoors they have a pretty good article about a newbie on a long ranger. Another article addresses the baby reel issue and other do's and don'ts. Plus a big game Kayak article by Pal.
Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

A Steelhead always knows where he is going, but a Man seldom does.

True enough-- that's why i brought it up as a yak landed fish.
