Hi,

To clarify, I did not mean the drag is notchy just the lever.  It seems like it goes from light drag to pretty stiff right away.  Not sure if it was just the one I looked at or all devices.

My drag is pretty quick-- light to heavy really fast...the "bait" setting is almost too light, and when set to handle anything other than a little bait, "strike" is too heavy.
it was also notchy in the bad way- but i got that fixed with a little TLC

I found an Avet LX on Craigs list for $200. Is this a good deal? I am not going to buy it so feel free if it is.

Depends on whether it is a 2-speed reel or not

Here are 3 suggestions to make the drag smoother...

1. Make sure the 4 belleville washers on the left side of the spool are stacked as shown in the schematic (2 pairs with convex side facing out)

2. Apply grease to shaft shoulder on the left end of the shaft

3. Apply cal's universal grease to brake pad.

I  break my reels down, clean and lube after every saltwater trip and my Avet's are in perfect condition after years of hard use. Alan Tani wrote a nice post on Avet maintenace which I totally agree with. Even with the price increase, a good value, IMHO.
