Report from our recent trip to Punta Colorada in Baja's East Cape

This fish deserves a few shots. A new kayak fishing record 75lb Rooster fish from Tony Adams. I spoke with the people at Boga grip today and they said it take at least 70lbs to max the scale and this fish did it easy so we are calling it 75lbs.






Steve and his 58 pound Rooster, this fish dragged him at least a mile and a half off shore after hooking it right next to the beach. Took him a hour and a half

Overall a great trip with more big Roosters landed and released then on any other trip. We saw a lot of Marlin but only had three actually take a bait but none stuck for more than a couple of minutes.
Great trip with great groups.

Holy rooster city!!!!  Incredible scores.  Glad to see SteveS with a toad!

I hate to admit that it was the only fish that i landed during the "official" part of the days...it was definitely a bit slow.  I managed to miss and or drop a few other fish.  Do have to say that an hour and a half of sledding into the deep blue- especially after nearly being dragged into the surf- made the trip worth it.  As Vince said, "you brought a chopstick to a gunfight, and won" - caught on my Avet SX and trevala M - with 40#

Those are some great pics.  After looking at Tony's big rooster for a few minutes I'm gonna say that rooster looks more like 80 lbs.  Thats tough you guys didn't have a bigger scale out there. 

But hey, wheres the report?  This is a great photo journal you've posted here but wheres the bait/lures used and temperatures and all that other stuff???     JTF

Congrats on the great catch and trip. The Avet is fine just build/buy some Calstar or Seeker rods and you can put the hurt on any pelagic including big roosters. Trevala's and Baidarkas are good rods but if you really need to turn a big pelagic from the kelp, surf or rocks or bring a big tuna to the gaff, a more powerful butt section is more optimal, IMO.

Me mainly fished live mullet.

The rod was not the issue, plenty of pulling power, the issue was the reel. It had taken a dunk in the surf the day before and the drag was super sticky. It was scary to watch the rod completely load up then the drag would let go, there where a couple of times we thought the line had snapped only to watch the rod load back up. Very lucky to land the fish after an hour and a half when you consider that when I picked up the fish on the Boga to weigh it the hook just fell out of it's mouth. It was a great battle that started with us thinking Steve was going to end up on the beach in a rather thumpy little surf area to finishing the fight in the blue water at least a mile and a half offshore.
