The difference is the color and morphology of the bottom of the bays.  Halibut and other flatfish are like chameleons and adapt their coloration to match the background.  Put them both in a tank together and they'd both match the color of the substrate within reason i.e. anything from white, tan, brown, to almost black.

Hi Bsteves:

I didn't know that, thanks. I guess the ARW Butts were close to a oil slick? I have never seen a fish with such strange patterns.

I was wondering the same thing after I saw this recent pic from ARW...

Looks like the butt on the left was morphing to match something that spewed out of the Costco Busan or perhaps a Jackson Pollock painting.

Both butts in that picture are from ARW, the one w/ the oil slick pattern was kept in a soft cooler/bag after catch.  I'm guessing the skin contacting the bag caused the color to change.  The one that is uniform in color was kept in the tankwell on a stringer, and ocassionally dunked into the water to keep it wet.

Hi SC:

Thanks for the Intel, I was a little grossed out last time I fished
Pleasure Pt. when Marin had a Sewer overflow.

Thanks for the explanation Shicken!  Makes more sense now... have fun in Big Sur this weekend... hopefully B-A-R-F doesn't get heartburn again and you don't end up paddling a 30 foot Prowler... that did not look fun the day we were at Chrissy Field!

Hi Yakers:

Maybe if I placed a pic. of Pres. Bush on a Butt,  I could sell on on e-Bay and retire. :smt005
