Wow!

What a day!  PJ's post pretty much sums it up, with a slight bit of embellishing.  It wasn't tequila, it was wine. The word EPIC comes to mind.

I'm used to thumbing fish that are smaller, and my hands are so torn up from thumbing 6-8 lb verms that it hurts to type.  Scott had the right idea of using gloves.

Fish caught (and many released) included big vermpigs, the fattest football blues Ive ever seen, grassys, olives and browns and the ever present gophers.

The best part was seeing PJ's Nantucket sleighride, being pulled around by the thresher on the big blue,  I had to paddle to keep up with him.  I knew it was thresher when his tail broke the water.  I've hooked (but never landed) them off of Cayucos.

You can see, PJ being towed, Scott on the assist, and  Scott holding the tail of the thresher right before he was slapped.  My big Verms were 7+ and 8 lbs.

That music is playing in the background again..... El Canon Del Diablo.........El Canon Del Diablo.............El Canon Del Diablo....................................

Wow, those are hogs! What a gnarly launch too. ~~Now THATS f'n teamwork~~
Are great account of the thresher. This story has me thinking about ways to subdue such a beast, should I ever get lucky enough to hook one. Maybe a rope w/a pre-tied noose and a bouy/float on the end. Slip the noose on the tail then hold on to the rope (the float is just in case I have to let go of the rope for safety reasons). I don't know, just thinking out loud.
Thanks for the report(s) and pics guys!

I can't tell you where, but I can tell you that's nowhere near Cambria. The coast highway doesn't look like that until well north of San Simeon...

Andy -

It was really great fishing with you. It was a real drag watching that jumbo ling jump out of your tankwell. At least the jumbo verms made up for the loss. Thanks for pulling my yak up the cliff. Let's hookup at the cap du nord soon. I will bring the beer and man dogs. BTW, next time you can grab the shark tail and I will take the pictures.  :smt005

Thats what I was thinking.  Noose up tail then drag it backwards to drown it.

Yup, then after lassoing that beast and hog-tying it to your kayak....we'll call you the shark wrangler!

I agree, easier said than done but definitely a better option than getting tailwhipped in the face.
