Launched into Carmel Bay with Kevin into VERY nice conditions.  He’s been dormant for about a year, but now getting jocked up for a July and August for the ages, yakfishing-wise.

Water was calm and clear, imagine it would be a good dive (More on that later)

Since we knew the fishing would be more finesse-style with smaller fish, we both brought spinning-rods.  I started jigging with a 1oz silver-flash kastmaster on a 6’6” avocet (medium action) with 12 lb fireline braid.  that's what I spent the most time with today, over my iron rod.

Couple drops into the AM, kastmaster gets SLAMMED!  I was praying ling or hallie BUT pulled up a spiny dogfish shark instead.

Moved around some to find the fish.  Picked at the gophers, a jr ling, and a couple of very healthy RED fish, even a couple dabs.  Some on 4” big hammer in anchovy w/ ¾ oz leadhead, some on kastmaster, a couple on storm swimbait.  I say “red” fish b/c I’m not sure what they were.  I’d hope to have my fish ID skills on lock by now, but oh well.  I just got back from Tahiti so my brain is still on vacation.

Saw at least 4 other yaks out there beside us, heard some chatter re a lot of “nada”.  Met this nice guy Mark who was picking away at some them and having a great time.

Paddled through a field of really healthy bull kelp.  Tried for the hail mary fish but nobody was home.  Landed in pan flat conditions.

Neatest part of the day was having a big bait ball breeze through right between us.  I spotted a boil, haled Kevin, and we flanked it, casting into it to see what was the hubbub.  No joy, but it was neat to see.

Couple of random shots of Kevin.  He forgot his seat at home so he was doing a 4 hour situp, literally.  By about 1030, he was busting a serious gansta lean.  Hope the hip flexors aren’t too sore
